Family of six dies in station wagon crash near Lordsburg

A father Liev Buss 38 mother Cecilia Buss 35 and four children perished when their station wagon collided with a road roller at a construction site eight miles east of Lordsburg around 7:30 p m last Saturday. Surviving children Charlotte 7 Lowell 12 and an eight month old died later, and eight year old Larr died Sunday as the father succumbed Monday to injuries. Three other children were seriously injured. The crash occurred on a divided highway under construction near a windmill trailer belonging to J W Jones Construction Co. The family had moved from Roswell to Lordsburg that day after living in the trailer for some time.

Prisoner Escapes From Hidalgo County Jail

A prisoner overpowered jailer Albert Lytle at 9 30 p m Saturday April 24 and escaped from Hidalgo County jail via the furnace room door in the basement. Charles Oscar Stockton 32 held as parole violator from Texas fled after the incident and was last seen running north on Highway 70. Sheriff Leroy McCarty aided by tracking led to a circle back to Highway 80 about a mile west of town where Stockton apparently hitched a ride.

LULAC Grants Two $150 Scholarships to Lordsburg Grads

LULAC announces two $150 scholarships for Lordsburg High School graduates this year. Manuel S Ramirez, president, says awards honor need grades citizenship integrity dependability leadership and college promise. Cooperation from the public behind LULAC projects enabled the scholarships.

Animas School Pre-School Clinic Scheduled May Fourth

The Animas School will hold a pre school clinic for children entering first grade this fall on Wednesday May 4 at 1 00 p m at the school. Dr James H Baxter and school nurse Mrs Mary Frances Rice will conduct a physical exam and immunization checks. Parents should bring birth certificates for proper enrollment and children will meet teacher Mrs Ruth Strickland for school routine familiarization. Rodeo children’s families are invited to participate in the clinic portion.

Delegates Named To Girls State From Lordsburg High

Delegates representing Lordsburg High School Junior Class this year are Jean Galusha and Loretta Gandara. Alternates are Patty Warren and Nancy Blakey. Sessions of Girls State are annually held on the University of New Mexico campus in June to teach citizenship and the duties rights and responsibilities of American citizenship in a nonpartisan program.

WNMU Symphonic Band To Perform Here Today

The Western New Mexico University Symphonic Band and mixed chorus will give four performances starting at 9 am Friday at Lordsburg High School. About 65 performers travel by chartered bus and return to Silver City by noon. The band conducts by Roger Brandt and the choral groups by Lewis Spencer.

Arturo Saucedo To Head Local VFW Post

Arturo Tuttie Saucedo was elected commander of VFW Post 3099 at the last meeting succeeding Ernesto Renteria. Other officers elected include Manuel V. Renteria senior vice commander Carlos Saucedo junior vice commander Martin F. Leyva trustee George Bridgford chaplain and James H. Kinkema quartermaster. Installation is set for La Fiesta Sunday May 2 at 2 30 p.m. Thomas P. Foy past department commander from Silver City will install. All members and their wives are urged to attend.

Mrs. Davis Wins Grand Prize In Cotton Style Show

Mrs. John Davis of Animas captured the grand prize and first in town and country two piece division at the Cotton Extra vaganza Style Show held last Friday at the Cafetorium. Over 72 models by 40 seamstresses showcased spring garden paths as out of town judges praised the quality with district contest in Deming ahead.
