Filing fee fight shapes NM campaigns this week
The capital press reports a court split over campaign filing fees. The U.S. District Court in Albuquerque ruled no U.S. Senate candidate must pay the $2,550 fee while the State Supreme Court required a 6 percent salary fee for most offices. The U.S. Supreme Court stayed the state ruling, prompting many candidates to file before the April 21 deadline.

Lordsburg Elks Lodge No. 1813 plans National Youth Week in May to honor youth leaders. The lodge will donate hall and kitchen space to Lordsburg High School groups and sponsor fund raising dances and gatherings free of charge. LHS seniors and the Junior Rodeo Association receive coke concessions to raise funds.

Desert Bighorn Ram Added To Redrock Herd
The two year old desert bighorn ram was added to the captive breeding herd at Red Rock Wildlife Area north of here after capture from the San Andres National Wildlife Refuge. The ram was tranquilized from a helicopter and released in good condition with five ewes, with two more sheep planned for fall captures. Offspring will restock southern New Mexico habitats.

A Lordsburg group of twelve men traveled to Hatch for the VFW District IV meeting. Three Lordsburg members were elected to key district posts: Joe Orona District Commander George Rodriguez Sr Vice Commander and Martin Leyva District Quartermaster. A picnic is set for Sunday April 30 with installation of new officers at 2 PM.
