County Democratic Central Committee chaired by Maura Rice calls a 7:00 p.m. meeting at the County Commissioners Chambers to select a new Vice-Chairman after Grant Nelson resigned and moved to Silver City. Lordsburg Council Debates Police Protection Contract

Lordsburg councillors weigh renewing a nearly 140000 joint powers agreement with Hidalgo County to fund city police protection, amid calls for cost cuts and a possible return to a city police force. A public input ballot raised questions over sampling and transparency as the council also heard on water use from the waste treatment plant. Mayor Koff again left the meeting early prompting criticism from Councilmember Hill.

Robert Johns Seeks Democratic Nomination for Co Commission

Longtime Hidalgo County resident Robert Johns announces his bid for the Democratic nomination for County Commissioner from District I. He is a Virden native, a farm and ranch operator, and former Hidalgo County Road Department employee of about five years. Johns aims to improve county road conditions if elected. He and his wife Linda have two children, Vann and Pam.

SBA Disaster Loans Now Being Processed in Albuquerque

The SBA Disaster Loan Office in Albuquerque announces all New Mexico originations under disaster declarations No. 1743 and 1745 are being processed locally. Loans cover physical and economic losses with terms up to seven percent. economic injury loans at eight percent. Deadlines include June 16 1980 for physical damage under 1745 and September 15 1980 for economic injury.

PD Employees Finish Voting On Thursday

Balloting by about 350 employees at the Phelps Dodge Smelter in Playas ended Thursday after three days under the National Labor Relations Board. The Amalga mated United Steelworkers of America sought as bargaining agent. Teamsters and International Union of Operating Engineers withdrew from the ballot. Ballots were to be counted at week’s end, with a bare majority needed to decide representation.

Farmington Man Bound Over In Lordsburg Robbery Case

A 33 year old Farmington man, Albert Walter Matthews, was bound over to Sixth District Court on charges of kidnapping, burglary, larceny over $20,000 and aggravated battery after a nearly day long preliminary hearing in Lordsburg Magistrate Court. He was arrested near Tucson and later turned over to New Mexico authorities. The January 9 raid on an elderly Lordsburg resident yielded about $77,000 in rare coins and valuables. About $20,000 of the stolen items were recovered with ongoing hopes for a second arrest. Matthews is held in Hidalgo County Jail on a $500,000 bond and requested court appointed counsel.

Body found in Burro Mountains near Lordsburg ID still unknown

Lawmen await word from the state medical examiner on identifying a badly decomposed adult female body unearthed by a Lordsburg family in Gold Gulch. The body was moved to Albuquerque for autopsy after Grant County investigators found new evidence and sent samples to the Santa Fe crime lab for analysis.
