Plane Jaunt Highlights Lordsburg Visit and Fast Return

Mayor A Karger recounted a Sunday trip to Lordsburg with Frank Pree. They flew in the Fairchild plane, returning from Douglas in about 50 minutes, praising the craft for comfort and potential in fish delivery and interior city commerce.

J D Jordan Former Hidalgo County Tax Assessor Dies

J D Jordan a popular Hidalgo county official died suddenly Tuesday at his ranch near Rodeo. Death followed a return from Douglas with heart failure listed as the cause. Rev. W W Wilkerson led funeral services yesterday at the Douglas home at 2 00 P M.

Miss Mary Kelly principal accompanied by Miss Idriel Thomas home economics teacher and Miss Ydna Garner English instructor all of the Lordaburg schools spent the Easter vacation at the home of Mr and Mrs W J Kelly. Deming Crappie and Mr and Mrs W J Downey spent the week end at El Paso with Mr Downey attending the Shriners meeting.

Candidate for District Judge Visit in Lordsburg

W Hay of Silver City Democratic candidate for district judge visited Lordsburg on Wednesday. He added his name to the candidate list in the Liberal office. Hay is a World War veteran and lawyer who started practice in Indiana in 1916 and moved to Grant County in 1923, later settling in Silver City in 194?. He is expected to run in the Grant County primary on May 17.

Prisoners Taken To Santa Fe In Murder Case

Victoria Araiza and Raphael Hernandez, convicted of murder in Lyman Garretts death, were taken to Santa Fe last Sunday by Sheriff Oscar Allen and Deputy Harry McKell. Francisco Romero, given a sentence of one to three years, also moved to Santa Fe. Paul Siple Honored by Byrd Antarctic Patrol Hero

Sea Scout Paul A. Siple of Erie Pennsylvania, youngest in Byrd's Antarctic Paxpedition, received high commendation from Admiral Byrd for two years of service since leaving New York. Siple, an Eagle Scout, served as a deck watch aboard ships and as a zoologist collecting specimens, training dog teams, and aiding in penguin relocation aboard the Larsen. He later returned to Dunedin and Wellington before heading to the United States aboard the Larsen.

Sound system upgrade at the Palace Theatre

Palace Theatre switches to Western Electric sound equipment after unsatisfactory initial setup. New gear will be installed as soon as it arrives and will match the system used at Silver City and Deming. Management regrets the change but aims to improve patrons' sound in films.

Lordsburg Bond Issue Won By Douglas Bank

The city of Lordsburg sold its 870000 bond issue at par with a five percent yield. The Bank of Douglas won the bid amid competition from El Paso Denver Kansas City and other bond houses. John A Crowell cashier of the Bank of Douglas attended the bidding and returned the same day. Martin Wright a sheriff candidate was in Lordsburg yesterday.

Work at the P O R well progressed after five loose collars were found near the hiver end of the string. The crew pulled the pipe and secured it in solid rock at 1640 feet. Water was bailed out yesterday and drifting was to resume today.

Deputy Counselor of Mexico Visits for Appeal Fund

J. Rodrigues of Juarez, Deputy Counselor of Mexico, visited Lordsburg to assist Victoria Araiza and Raphael Hernandez, recently convicted of first degree murder. Funds are being raised among Spanish American residents and some Americans to support the appeal defense. On Wednesday, $186 was raised. I. J. Ownby took Mr. Rodrigues to Silver City to meet Frank H. Patton regarding the Hernandez and Araiza case.
