District Meeting of Women’s Clubs in Lordsburg

The Second District Federation of Women's Clubs of New Mexico meets in Lordsburg on Saturday April 26. The day opens at the Methodist Church with a 9:00 a.m. program and 9:30 a.m. executive session. Afternoon sessions begin at 1:30 p.m. with department papers on Americanization library extension Indian art and more. A benediction closes and a 1:00 p.m. benevolent reception follows at Up-To-Date Restaurant with musical and vocal numbers and an art exhibit at Mrs Ownby’s home inviting public viewing.

All Angled Up at Star Law Night Draws Big Crowd

Death of two prominent rodeo women last week

Fireman’s Banquet an Elaborate Affair in Lordsburg

The Lordsburg fire department held an elaborate banquet with Fat Hoy’s famed spread. Chief Montague led to the limit while City Attorney McHalffey served as toastmaster. Speeches highlighted department organization, insurance rate cuts, and praise for Mayor Fisher and the council.

Mildred Clayton Recital Delights Lordsburg Audience

The Star Theatre hosted pianist Mildred Clayton and pupil Misa Karma Deane of El Pato in a well received program with local artists including Miss Dieane, Mrs. Crowell, Mrs. Walker, and Mr. Rose. A grand reception followed, with attendees from Howie and praises for stage decor and training.

Woman's Club Program Highlights American Music

The Lordsburg Womans Club met at Mrs. Vanderpool’s home with a varied program arranged by Mrs. Crowell. Mrs. Harnwell sang and played works by Kroeger, Mrs. Aldrich spoke on Carrie Jacobs Bond, and others performed including a duet by Mrs. Vanderpool and Mrs. Aldrich. The afternoon closed with a paper on the Development of Music and refreshments.

Hidalgo Taxes Decline to State's Lowest Rate

For 1923 Hidalgo County taxes fall to 102.2 mills from 492 mills in 1922 making it the lowest in the state. Only Grant County at 10.9 mills and Hidalgo at 9 percent appear lower according to the Deming Graphic.

McHalffey Declares Candidacy for District Attorney

Grant County is expected to keep the district judge, leaving the district attorney race to Hidalgo or Luna counties. L. P. McHalffey reports no Luna candidate yet, positioning Hidalgo for the seat. He is a Lordsburg律师, former Mississippi war prosecutor, El Paso Cattle Loan Company attorney, and current city attorney with a wife and son.

Hospital Board Visits Clifton Site for Hospital Plan

A luncheon and site visit drew prominent figures including Dy. G. G. Jarrett, Dr. L. B. Bilis, Dr. H. W. A. Howkes, Dr. W. J. Bin, and Senator H. W. A. Fillett with Mayor Peter Riley of Clifton. The project, being considered favorably by the General Hospital Board of the Methodist Church, aims to establish a hospital near Clifton with support from the Arizona Hospital Commission and local leaders.

Resurrection Scene Shown At Baptist Church

Sunday service at the Baptist Church featured a staged resurrection scene titled The Resurrection of Our Savior. A garden of Gethemane with a seven foot cross, artificial roses, and pine and cedar backdrop accompanied by twenty child angels and special Easter numbers. A baptism concluded the program, with Mrs Marion Walker playing Rock of Ages.
