A county committee outlined Saturday May 21 as the primary date with district nominations for county commissioners and school superintendent voters outside Lordsburg and Virden. Registration will occur May 17–18 in the Lordsburg precinct and May 18 in other precincts. Senator Atwood said the committee would reconvene later and notify members in time.
A large club gathering from Eburg and surrounding areas heard an eloquent lecture by Mr K B Carson. Mrs Elizabeth Winters presided and introduced Ruth Wood who performed Largo from the New World Symphony to open the program.

Members of the F. E. Club gathered at R. B. Lundgren home for an Easter party with clever refreshments. Guests included Herman Gustafson J Baxter J T McNutt R A Crider and others, who received miniature chocolate rabbits Easter eggs and gifts. Mrs R A Crider was honored for her birthday with a novelty party gift exchange.
Here from Hurley and Mrs. F. E. Morton, Miss a Lou Morton, who has been at a screen test in Hollywood, their younger son drove over Hurley Sunday afternoon. a Lou is doing dramatic work at State Teachers College and will be in reach for Hollywood after the summer term.
W T Bud Conner eldest Hidalgo county pioneer celebrated at a Nassau County style event hosted by Mrs Minnie Hardin. A large birthday cake with eighty five candles and another cake honored the guest. Six of eight children present with thirty relatives in California absent. Conner born in Burnet County Texas spent most life in Grant and Hidalgo counties New Mexico.
The Methodist Missionary Society gathered in the church undercroft on Friday April 15 with hostesses Mrs Charles Fuller and Mrs Harry Scofield. Rev Bryan Hall led a Good Friday devotional and reports from the Marfa Texas convention were given by Mrs Gowan, Mrs R B Lundgren and Mrs Bryan Hall. Refreshments followed for a list of members then the group planned the next meeting for May 6 at Mrs L B Robinson’s home with Mrs E J Malone as assistant hostess and Mrs Percy Brown as program leader.
Herbert Cayford vice-president of Beaumont and Hohman Advertising of Chicago and Edward McSherry Pacific Greyhound Lines district passenger agent visited Friday. They viewed advertising visuals used in the Lordsburg Liberal and other publications and discussed with the Liberal and the Chamber of Commerce.
A county meeting for ranchers will be held at the Bill Davis ranch 25 miles southwest of Animas at 1 p m Monday May 2. Topics include wool and mohair market prep errors, cooperative marketing, shearing methods, and sanitary board activities. Speakers include W A Wunsch Roy Connelley P E Neale Tom Snell and W H Tolbert.
The Range Conservation Program, active in Hidalgo county for two years, will continue in 1938. Ranchers may receive partial reimbursements for practices such as natural reseeding, artificial reseeding, contour listing, spreader dams, terraces, earthen tanks, concrete or rubble dams, well drilling, water place development, and fire guards. Maximum earnings depend on acreage and grazing capacity, with new option to borrow from lending agencies after county committee approval. Committeemen Joe Woods and Herbert Strange supervise, with information from them or local county agent.
Cecil McNutt of the McNutt Oil and Refining Company from El Paso was a business visitor in Lordsburg on Monday.
Welcome home Mr and Mrs Alvin Parker and daughter Barbara Ann who return to Lordsburg where Mr Parker will serve this week as local manager and distributor for Sinclair Oil Company with headquarters in Lordsburg.

Lordsburg joins national celebration of National Air Mail Week May 15 to 21 with school essays and poster contests Wings Across America. The event features Post Office leaders, local committees, and pilot Charlie Mayne guiding the air mail ship.
District Judge George W. Hay and Court Stenographer Mra. Margaret Fates presided. The Scarbrough vs Diffenderfer et al case, involving mining equipment, was decided for the plaintiff in full on the docketed claim. The court also awarded $40 per month for the period defendants held the equipment.
Claud Cutliff, fugitive since 1942, charged with killing U S Border Patrolman John Heard at Antelope Wells Hidalgo County in 1932, was arrested in Elko Nevada on April 16. FBI and Grant County Sheriff say killing was premeditated and the victim was shot without chance to defend. He is to be returned to Lordsburg for trial as Hidalgo County holds venue.
Miss Naomi Wood daughter of Mr and Mrs E J Wood of Lordsburg is among the honor students for mid term grades of the second semester at Abilene Christian College announced by Mrs Clara Bishop college registrar.
Miss Nell Searbo of El Paso has been visiting friends in Lordsburg during the past week.
The Lordsburg segment on KOB Albuquerque praised the city as a major little city with fine tourist facilities and new public buildings. The Hot Springs 4-H Club broadcast preceded by Mrs Olive B Cruse leading the program from the Albuquerque station.
Edwin DeMoss former Lordsburg star athlete and 1937 all state basketball center has been awarded his freshman numeral at Stanford. He is remembered with regret by the Santa Fe high school Demons of 1937 as the chief reason they did not meet the Albuquerque Bulldogs in the state finals that year.
Chief Harry Gale and Hidalgo firefighters hosted a Saturday night banquet at the Hidalgo Coffee Shop attended by Mayor elect Ernest J. Lordsburg Business and Professional Women’s Club installs officers at the home of Mrs. Luella Clark on April 14. W H Bolton from the Department of Public Health spoke from Silver City on standard milk ordinances and cafe health rules. Mary Dee Kipp presided, new members Maude Green and Emma Muir were elected, bridal cakes cut, and May’s meeting to focus on the legislative committee led by Mildred Hoard.
Harriet Jane Chase daughter of Mr and Mrs P M Chane marked her first birthday at home Tuesday afternoon. Relatives and mothers including Mrs Ray Elma, Mrs Ray Edington, Mrs Harlan Black and others attended with children, though some could not be present due to illness. Guests enjoyed cake ice cream and small favors while many photos captured the event.
Mrs Felix Jones led a Wednesday gathering of the W M B of the First Baptist church with a brief program and social time. Refreshments included fruit salad apple leaf cake and coffee served to Mrs Sam Gass Mrs Marvin Pierce Mrs Amy Pence Mrs Frank Corbell Mrs R K George and guest Mrs Schneider.
The Baptist church of Lorda burg observed Home Coming Day on Easter Sunday to celebrate paying off the mortgage. Founded 1907, eight charter members included Levi Wright and Eva Marshall. current living members include Eva Marshall and Mrs Cappleman. The mortgage burn marked the end of debt as the congregation gathered for a basket dinner on the church lawn.
A wire from Rev. Hegan Hall of Van Horn Texas reports the Methodist District Conference will meet in Lordsburg in April 1949. The two day event draws many delegates and runs from Lordsburg on the west to Marfa on the east.
The senior Christian Endeavor group of the Church of Christ held a Resurrection themed service with Aunt Anna Ownby’s reading by Helhene Fuller and scripture by David Warren. Speakers included Leonard Brimberry Fred Ewing and Helen Brimberry. Afterward three girls were baptized. Next Sunday the Senior C E meets at 7 pm and the Intermediates at 6 pm with topics on Christian Living.
On a Saturday afternoon at three, Mrs. KR B Lundgren hosted an Easter Egg Hunt and party for the nursery and beginners of the Methodist Church School. Attendees included Terry Crider, Darlene Moses, Marvin Brown, Danny Dunagan, Margaret Richards, Arlene Fuller, and many other children. helpers listed include Eugenia Richards, Bethene Fuller, Earline Brown, and numerous Mrs. and Misses assisting Mrs. Sundy ran.
The Easter program at the Methodist church drew special attention as seven young people joined the congregation and the choir performed the Easter Cantata described in Liberal last week.

The Lions Club met Tuesday noon with Lion John L. Augustine presiding. H. L. Hildwein of State College spoke as guest of County Agent Harlan A. Black. A telegram from Rep. J. J. Dempney promised retention of Grateiny Camp at Animas. Lions voted to oppose excessive speech on Railroad Avenue after a tourist nearly struck a child. Ladies night planned Friday at 7 30 in the undercroft of the Moist church.
The Women Field Army calls April Cancer Control Month encouraging New Mexico Business and Professional Women's Clubs to contact local leaders. Clubs should assist as much as possible. early treatment can cure cancer and neighbors should be helped.
The Cemetery Association announces a food sale to be held at the offices of the Community Public Service Company on Saturday April 30. Proceeds support cemetery upkeep and related charitable aims.
