Democratic Primary Set for County Nominations

A county committee outlined Saturday May 21 as the primary date with district nominations for county commissioners and school superintendent voters outside Lordsburg and Virden. Registration will occur May 17–18 in the Lordsburg precinct and May 18 in other precincts. Senator Atwood said the committee would reconvene later and notify members in time.

W T Bud Conner eldest Hidalgo county pioneer celebrated at a Nassau County style event hosted by Mrs Minnie Hardin. A large birthday cake with eighty five candles and another cake honored the guest. Six of eight children present with thirty relatives in California absent. Conner born in Burnet County Texas spent most life in Grant and Hidalgo counties New Mexico.

Missionary Society Meets at Church Undercroft

The Methodist Missionary Society gathered in the church undercroft on Friday April 15 with hostesses Mrs Charles Fuller and Mrs Harry Scofield. Rev Bryan Hall led a Good Friday devotional and reports from the Marfa Texas convention were given by Mrs Gowan, Mrs R B Lundgren and Mrs Bryan Hall. Refreshments followed for a list of members then the group planned the next meeting for May 6 at Mrs L B Robinson’s home with Mrs E J Malone as assistant hostess and Mrs Percy Brown as program leader.

A county meeting for ranchers will be held at the Bill Davis ranch 25 miles southwest of Animas at 1 p m Monday May 2. Range Conservation Program Extended in Hidalgo County for 1938

The Range Conservation Program, active in Hidalgo county for two years, will continue in 1938. Ranchers may receive partial reimbursements for practices such as natural reseeding, artificial reseeding, contour listing, spreader dams, terraces, earthen tanks, concrete or rubble dams, well drilling, water place development, and fire guards. Maximum earnings depend on acreage and grazing capacity, with new option to borrow from lending agencies after county committee approval. District Judge George W. Hay and Court Stenographer Mra. Margaret Fates presided. The Scarbrough vs Diffenderfer et al case, involving mining equipment, was decided for the plaintiff in full on the docketed claim. The court also awarded $40 per month for the period defendants held the equipment.

Alleged Border Patrol Slaying Suspect Captured in Nevada

Claud Cutliff, fugitive since 1942, charged with killing U S Border Patrolman John Heard at Antelope Wells Hidalgo County in 1932, was arrested in Elko Nevada on April 16. FBI and Grant County Sheriff say killing was premeditated and the victim was shot without chance to defend. He is to be returned to Lordsburg for trial as Hidalgo County holds venue.
