Governor Apodaca visited Lordsburg on a two town tour with Transportation Secretary Ruben Miera and Natural Resources Secretary William Huey. He spoke at Lordsburg High School explaining the need to gather evidence on issues like nuclear waste and marijuana before decisions, then met residents at Sunshine Haven Nursing Home and Rico's Restaurant before flying to Bayard and Hurley for further events.
Hidalgo County commissioners heard from Bill Collins representing REACT Team seeking approval to install two citizen band radio units in ambulances. Paramedic Don McNutt supported the plan, noting it would aid emergency response and communications with police and sheriff agencies. Board approved the request. The panel also opened bids for Virden community center and library, Sterling Construction Co. of Silver City submitting the low bid at 49400. Human Resources Council introduced themselves and explained their role replacing Southwest Mental Health services.
Hidalgo General Hospital plans to reopen Monday April 17 after state re licensing. Hospital administrator Sara Callaway told Hidalgo County Commissioners that the facility will resume full services with a new laboratory technician on staff, ending a December closure caused by staffing and lab shortages. The board approved 14,000 from operating funds to cover past due bills, with officials confident the hospital can survive until the May tax levy.
Lordsburg's Municipal School Board heard an extensive report on the proposed operating budget for area schools at its regular meeting Monday evening March 10. Superintendant Dr. Joel Price and principals Phil DeFoor Henry Marrufo and Paul Jewell Traylor presented budget related material.
Lordsburg Police Chief Bob Hall told the Liberal on Tuesday April 11 that four warrants from the Sixth District Attorney’s office target three people involved in two robberies at the Trail Motel and the Shell Station. The suspects, all residing outside New Mexico, are on the NCIC and extradition is approved once they are located. Warranted charges include larceny over $100 tampering with evidence conspiracy and receiving stolen property.
