In New Mexico a shy young man eludes suitors as excitement grows around the Senior Class Play Bashful Mr Bobbs set for April 21. Local girls pursue the bashful lead, who talks at times but bolts when interest appears.
Last Wednesday after school about thirty sophomores and juniors picnicked on the Silver City Highway. They enjoyed games like Baseball Chinese Tag Red Rover and Whip Crack. Guests included Principal C Miller and Mr and Mrs Mearns.
Natividad Munoz and Ricardo Morales join third grade and Alfredo Morelos is noted in fifth grade in Tucson. The Central third team was shut out 19 to 0 by the third grade boys with a return game planned. Victoria and Lorenzo Gustamente enter the primary department.
Last Monday Miss Fairly and her class of girls toured Hidalgo Hotel inspecting the laundry furnace lobby foyer courtyard and several rooms. Mr Holt invited the group to his office to view his Rogues Gallery.
The first Burro Polo event will feature Lordsburg Lions Club squaring off with teams from Las Cruces Silver City and Safford. Rivalries run deep after last year's Silver City win and taunting exchanges between clubs escalate anticipation for Southwestern Championship action.
Lions Club President Jeffus reads an editorial supporting recovery and urges government restraint. Palm praises R F C work while Ross outlines regional employment plans. A nominating committee of Tatsch Miller and McInnis is formed to select officers next month. A box supper at the Central Gym supports the athletic fund tonight.
Mesdames Marie Graham Ed Clark Ralph Smith hosted a bridge gathering Saturday afternoon at Mrs Clark s home. Guests included J Heather J Luckie Eddie Allen Roy Evans Richard Tatsch Vin son D N Collins Nat Gammon J H Clark Ernest Short Claude Olney Alvin Parker J L Augustine Earle Kerr L C Brown Ronald Egan Grovener Weldon Gilman Walter Hoswell N Shellberg and Misses Margaret Green Faye Schiefelbein. Mrs Kerr won high Mrs Short second and Mrs J H Clark low. Prizes went to Mesdames Tatsch Allen Gilman Sheilberg Brown and Cammon. Chicken salad wafers sandwiches olives stuffed dates and ice tea served.
NEW LEADER T. B. Williams formerly of Electra Texas will become leader of the BYP U at the Baptist church next Sunday night he having agreed to accept the place last Sunday literature is already on hand and the young folks are urged to be present Mrs Frank Sykes is leader of the Junior BYPU.
C L Brown is spending the week in Santa Fe for unspecified activities with no further details available.
Mrs. Pearl Cross and her son Billy were visiting when Ainsworth Stoertron handled a 22 pistol and fired, injuring Billy’s left side near the heart. Surgeons removed the bullet and Billy recovered enough to return home, with his father the late B H Gross having died earlier from an accidental discharge. The incident underscores keeping firearms away from children.
Early Saturday a fire at the Piggly Wiggly warehouse is listed as undetermined origin. The blaze was contained in the warehouse with extensive smoked merchandise, though contents were not injured. An insurance inspector has begun an invoice, with report pending on a loss potentially running into hundreds.
The W M V U of Baptist Church met Wednesday afternoon at Mrs Will Lynn's home. Members present included Mesdames Christian Gass Corbell Pence Felix Jones and Alvin Bradberry. Enchiladas were served and the lesson was from 1 John chapter 6.
Mrs. Jack Heather entertained at dinner Monday in honor of her husband. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Harry Rosenstein, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Short, and Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Jones.
The mass meeting led by Mayor Rosenstein at the courthouse drew many attendees to discuss city and county welfare. Speakers urged industrial and tourism development, highway improvements, lower taxes, and boosting Hidalgo county products with a plan for more highway building and public works.
Easter program at the Methodist Church features the cantata The Carpenter of Nazareth performed at 11 00 am and 8 00 pm with the district conference listed and a full cast including Mrs Ross Mrs Fuller Mr Rosenstein and Mr Mearns. A Sunday morning message Eternity in Our Hearts precedes the cantata and an Easter egg hunt is scheduled for Saturday at ten o clock with parents invited to provide cars.
Glen D. Macy formerly district engineer at Roswell was chosen as state highway engineer on Tuesday morning. He replaces W. R. Eccles who becomes district engineer at Roswell. Macy had been in contracting but left to join the state project forces. Mrs. M. E. Crooms returns to Animas after visiting her daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Smith are doing fine work on the courthouse lawn.
A Lordsburg gathering led by J. H. Pitspatrick endorsed candidates for federal and state posts. Herbert J. McGrath won unopposed for Collector of Customs El Paso, while Albert S. Roberts backed by Lordsburg supporters. Jesse T. Smith received all votes for Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue. Eugene Montague was unanimously endorsed for postmaster. Eddie Aflen won first ballot for state highway patrol, Frank Weldon named deputy state game warden.
The local W C Temperance Union held a program at the Church of Christ on Monday. Speaker J K Fuller of Deming warned against lax government faith and warned that repealing the Eighteenth Amendment could revive a stronger saloon era. Pupils and locals won small prizes for word lists connected to whiskey.
Johnnie Waugh of the U S D A Safford and his wife were luncheon guests of Mr and Mrs Gammon on Wednesday.
Mrs. Sam Gass Mrs. Frank Corbell and Mrs. Frank Sykes who had been ill at their homes are now able to be out again, marking a return to daily activities for the trio.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ellison of Los Angeles California arrive to establish residence in Lordsburg. Mrs Ellison is the daughter of W A Short.
Sheriff Conner and Deputy Bailey Smith brought Wayne Robinson and Ed True from Lubbock Texas after their arrest on orders of the sheriff They appeared before Judge P E B McCarthy at Rodeo Monday and pled guilty following state presentation by assistant district attorney L M McHallfey The pair were placed under bonds to appear before Judge George W Hay with no bandmen found yet
Junior members of the Big Horn Game Protective Association met in Hidalgo Hotel sample room with twenty three boys. Sergeant Hurley D. Jones led plans for this season's hunting and fishing trips and a second organizing meeting and officer elections were held at the Airport on April 13 at 7 0 pm.
Assistant state engineer W Carlos Powell and U S Geological Survey officer Berkeley Johnson met with local managers Barney Wood W P Hill and T D Strickland to appoint a new experimental farmer, Mr Dunlap, in the southern Lordsburg area. A state pump will be installed in the Dunlap well to start work. Powell credited Representative Warnel for securing a two year funding increase.
Lordsburg suffered three family departures last week. Vernon Wright and his group moved to Yuma Arizona to manage Rawleigh Products. Lester Hensley and family and Howard Harpham with his mother planned relocation to Las Cruces to run a Sinclair Service Station.
Mr and Mrs H J McGrath arrived from Silver City for a first of the week visit.
A gathering is planned for Monday April 17 at 7 30 p m in the lounge room of the Hidalgo Hotel. The aim is to lay groundwork for forming a golf club with rules and regulations.
