Kennecott Plans 600 Ton Sulfuric Plant At Hurley Smelter

Kennecott Copper Corp will install a 600 ton per day sulfuric acid plant and gas collection at the Hurley smelter. The project costs $18.5 million and targets federal and New Mexico sulfur oxide limits with operation set for mid 1974. The company also expands air quality monitoring with new trailers, stack stations, a 400 foot weather tower and telemetered data to a central computer.

The 1970 census reports Hidalgo County New Mexico with a average family income of 6568 dollars and per capita income of 1923 dollars. Population 4908 with 7.7 percent foreign born and 17.3 percent native born with foreign ancestry. Education and labor force figures are noted along with school enrollment and high school graduation rates. Copies of the report are available from the Government Printing Office for 1.75 dollars.

Postmaster John Robertson notes it offers guidance from top government tax experts with examples and updated tax rules. Demand is high nationwide, and additional copies are rushed to cities.

VFW Elects Officers For Coming Year

Manuel A. Martinez was elected commander of VFW Post 3099 for 1972-73 at the March 30 meeting. Raynaldo Martinez, Roberto Martinez, George Bridgford, Felix C. Jimenez, James H. Kinkema and Hector Molina were also chosen for key posts. Installation is set for April 30 at the K.P. picnic grounds. The post will sponsor two Little League baseball teams again this year.

Four Files For Hidalgo County Sheriff Primary

Four candidates filed for Hidalgo County sheriff in the primary election. The list, by ballot order from a drawing after the filing deadline, includes Eugene J Moore Teofilo Moreno Jakie W McCants and Doris R McCarty. Republican William A Swift filed for district three commissioner. Probate judge candidates Richard B Rice Ena A Mitchell announced unopposed are Earlene R Blakey, Martha M Harvell and Robert A Kerr for county offices. State Rep William J Upton unopposed in the primary will face Thelma Inmon in the general election in District 32 Luna Hidalgo counties.

U S Senator Joseph Montoya states he did not fund Lordsburg mayoral campaign nor have any stake in a local HUD housing project. He flatly rejects rumors about his wife’s interest and emphasizes his policy of refraining from municipal politics. The office did not disclose the letter’s recipient.
