Re Scheduled Windsail Races This Weekend

Windsail and motorcycle races sponsored by Lordsburg Optimist Club and the City of Lordsburg are set for the dry lake bed eight miles west of Lordsburg weather permitting. Entry fees are ten dollars with fifteen for late onsite registrations. Trophies awarded Sunday for windsails and cycles with best design honored.

Funeral Services for Walter DeVilbiss Jr. Held Here

Funeral services for Walter Thomas Kelly DeVilbiss Jr. age 22 were held Tuesday April 1 1986 at Heather Funeral Chapel. He lived in the Lordsburg Roadforks area and worked as a cashier at Shady Grove Truck Stop. Survived by parents Walter T DeVilbiss Sr. of Colorado and Vernis Moye of Roadforks NM plus grandparents siblings and extended family. Burial at Sheldon Cemetery. Animal Public Schools to hold Kindergarten registration April 18 from 9 to 11 AM in Room 105 of the new Elementary School. Parents must bring birth and immunization records. children must be 5 by Sept 1 1986. Current Kindergarten students have no class April 18.

Animas School Board Set To Meet April 8 Agenda

The Animas School Board will meet Tuesday April 8 at 7 30 p m in the Animas School Elementary Library. The upcoming agenda will be posted in all area post offices. The public is encouraged to attend.

Mt. View Cemetery extension surveyed, chain link fence ordered and irrigation installed at both cemeteries. Crosses completed for unmarked graves. City wide cleanup planned for late May engaging schools, groups and residents. Mayor Hill and I met Sheriff Darnell and Captain McDonald to align the 1986 87 police budget with city needs.

Dave Diaz Seeks Representative Spot in Local Race

Dave Diaz, lifelong Democrat from Grant County and WW2 veteran, seeks a representative post. He served on the Grant County airport board, chaired it, and notes FAA and state funding covered 95 percent of improvements. Diaz chaired the Tri-City CDBG board overseeing a 316,000 grant improving 10 homes per municipality and creating local jobs. He sits on the New Mexico Municipal League board, advocates for municipal bills, and has 8 years as Hurley councilman and 12 as mayor, recently re-elected March 4, 1986.

Crimestoppers Pay 500 To Concerned Citizen

Sheriff deputy reports crime stoppers paid 500 to a concerned citizen who provided information leading to a suspect’s arrest on 16 felony charges in Hidalgo County. Another 500 from federal funds awarded for information on stolen property. Additional weekly arrests include Don E. Clements, William J. Douglas Jr, Walter Coleman, Michael Ray Ayers, James D. Charnell, and Abelardo Murillo Palomino on various charges.

Lordsburg School Board Feels Budget Strain On Education

Lordsburg board president Lance and members voiced concern as the 1986-87 budget projections show expenses rising by 96,698, with the Legislature's equalization rate per student up increasing state support yet removing about 80,000 from teaching funds. Superintendent DeFoor presented the preliminary budget amid fiscal scrutiny. The countywide filing for Hidalgo offices occurred April 1 with 18 candidates, 15 Democrats and 3 Republicans, running.

Hidalgo County Assessor Robert A. Kerr reports 1986 Notices of Value mailed March 31. Most homeowners will see higher taxable values but taxes not expected to rise significantly.
