New Mexico runs CCC camps for youths aged 17 to 23. About 2,669 boys statewide, 86 camps in Arizona, five in ring and one in Texas. Camp work includes soil erosion control, tree planting, trails, and pest control under federal agencies. Enrollees earn $30 monthly, with $5 to $8 kept for personal expenses. education and vocational training offered. Selection via Public Welfare Department. Pague Family Patriarch Passes After Long Illness

H Pague an old time resident of the San Simon area died after a two year illness. He lived in Sierra Gordo Valley for many years and was survived by numerous children including Mrs Walter Dunagara of Pardsburg and others in Arizona Texas and California. Funeral services were held at Bowie with Rev Weaver officiating and burial near his mother in Bowie.

Sheriff Brings Alleged Check Forger to Hidalgo Jail

Sheriff John Cavin returned from Phoenix with Albert Whitelock now jailed in Hidalgo county. Whitelock is charged with forging a $26 check on Reese Scarborough and passing a $6 worthless check on Jimmy Wood in February. He was seized by Arizona officers March 24 in Gila Bend and held in Maricopa county jail before being sent to Hidalgo.

Picnic Supper Draws Lordsburg Youths Toward Silver City

A number of Lordsburg younger set drove toward Silver City Friday evening for a picnic supper, a welcome indoor party substitute. The group included Thomas Taggart, E Forest Sanders, H E Scofield, Glen Moses, James White, Robert Pierce, Marshall Fuller, T J McNutt, and Neil Burke. Mrs Moses, Mrs Scofield, Mrs Pierce, and Mrs McNutt joined the outing.

Scouts Enjoy Camp at Cureton Range Overnight

Last Saturday morning Edward Altuna, assistant Scout Master of Troop No. 123, led Boy Scouts on an overnight trip to the forest near the Cureton range off the Silver City highway. They cooked their meals, shared stories, and endured about an inch and a half of snow. Patrol leaders Alfredo Altuna and Liborio Hernandez led the group with Pat Camacho and Angel Gandara assisting. Other Scouts included Elias Estrada Roberto Altuna Alberto Lopez Frank Varela Ramon Saldana Ernesto Trejo and Mike Martinez.

Lions Club Holds Fine Tuesday Meeting and Plans Ladies Night

Lion President Augustine presided at a noon meeting with Lion Hall absent. Lion Miller announced Ladies night on Friday evening April 22 to be served in the Methodist church undercroft. Resolutions urged keeping a fluorspar tariff and government retention of the Animas Grazing Camp. Lion Secretary Taggart read a Las Cruces Lions invitation for a Ladies night dinner on April Fool's Day.

Happy Jim Makes Annual Visit to Lions Club

Baron James V. Auriema known as Happy Jim toured the Border Division during a Lions Club visit. He reported a first hour and a half collection of 203 dollars with total take of 276.50 dollars for the week. The Salvation Army aid includes food and lodging for over 67 thousand people, 5500 garments, 1180 pairs of shoes, and El Paso woman’s home and hospital caring for 71 girls and 180 babies with over 11 thousand days of care credited. Lordsburg chapter lists Willard E. Holt as president and Nat Gammon, George P. Jeffus as vice presidents with Boyd Maddox as secretary-treasurer.

Epworth League Picnic Outing to 85 Mine Scene

The Epworth League group planned a hike but turned it into a picnic when Rev. Bryan Hall and Mrs. Earl Chancellor chauffeured the youths to the 85 Mine. About fourteen members enjoyed the afternoon with the usual picnic fare as a bright weekly highlight.

Lordsburg progress continues as the Up To Date Cafe begins full natural gas installation. The setup includes a gas range unit a gas coffee urn and an eleven foot Electrolux refrigerator with a special meter to track operating cost. Texaco Sells Salesmanship in Three Day School

H Chapin and Van J Smith of Dallas led a three day salesmanship and service school for six teen Texaco station operators at Hidalgo Garage in Deming New Mexico. Roy Chambers Texaco rep for southwestern New Mexico also attended with Texaco volunteers from Deming Silver City and Alamogordo. The program aims for uniform courtesy and expert service across the nationwide Texaco system including certified rest rooms.

The Volunteer Fire Department announces its Firemen's Ball for April 2 at the Palador Pavilion with Pete Valverde's orchestra. Public Welfare Outline on Old Age Assistance Rules

In Hidalgo county February, 47 people received old age assistance. Mrs Ena Walter explains eligibility requires need, age 66 or older, continuous New Mexico residence for a year, and five of nine prior years in the state. Recipients may not get direct relief but can receive certain federal commodities. Assistance is permanent while needs exist and funds permit.
