Vanderbilt Cup winner fatally injured in race crash
New York news reports racer George Robertson, famed Vanderbilt Cup winner, died after his car at the Long Island Motor Parkway in Massapequa flipped, pinning him under the wreckage while traveling eighty miles per hour. Robertson had won the Vanderbilt Intermediate Cup in 1908 and earned many trophies.

Powerboat Drifts Ashore Off Sea Bright
A 30 foot powerboat with about 61 horsepower anchored off Sea Bright near the Octagon Hotel broke its anchor and ran aground amid calm seas. Peter White and ten crew members relaunched and re-anchored the vessel outside the breakers. Owner William Edsall of Brooklyn, with two companions, had left College Point for a day’s fishing off the Banks. They were ashore for a meal when the boat drifted into the breakers. Captain White and crew reportedly received $40 for the salvage.

Pony Deserts Home Then Is Recovered After Citywide Chase
Fire Chief C. P. Soret pursued his pony Buster after the animal slipped its stall halter and roamed the town. The chase stretched through Eatontown Shrewsbury and Middletown before Buster was found tucked in a box stall at Pred Hope's place in Shrewsbury. The escaped pony, soaked and penitent, will be restricted to prevent a recurrence.

Medal for Officer Who Rescued Girl at Sea
Patrolman Charles A. Edwards earned a gold medal for heroically rescuing Miss Phyllis E. Fretz from drowning off Long Branch on August 11, 1910. He swam through undertow in uniform to reach the exhausted woman, helped another swimmer to shore, and received public praise. A committee of friends organized the medal, presented at Hunter’s Leland Inn with remarks by lawyer Thomas P. Fay, and a satin ribbon bearing the subscribers’ names accompanied the award.

Trans Alpine flight ends in tragedy over Alps
In Rome on September 23 Chavez and Paillette completed a perilous trans Alpine flight from Brigue to Italy. Chavez, a Peruvian world altitude record holder, was likely fatally injured when high winds drove his aeroplane into a rock near Domodossola as thousands watched. Paillette landed at Stresa briefly then pressed on to Milan. Weyman, the American, started but returned after motor trouble, then made a second ascent at 3:45 this afternoon.
