Freehold Man Duped by New York Swindlers in Card Game
An elderly Freehold resident, Patrick Quinn, was lured by two men posing as buyers to a rig ride toward Englishtown. After a staged card game, Quinn won $1,000 from the men but was duped into adding $500. They fled with Quinn’s money, leaving a tin box and a brick as “souvenir.” He later borrowed $400, and the swindlers disappeared toward New York.

The Garret Smith residence at Ocean View near Atlantic Highlands was fully destroyed by a fire Tuesday afternoon while the owners shopped in Red Bank. Fire started from a defective chimney around 2:29 PM and, with no insurance, the house was lost before help could arrive.

Long Branch Man Aaron Martin Fatally Struck at Crossing
Aaron Martin supervisor of rail work and boss carpenter for the New York and Long Branch Railroad died after a fatal accident at the Broad street crossing near Red Hawk station. He died at Monmouth Memorial Hospital after being struck while directing Italian laborers. He was 65, a Long Branch resident for 31 years, and a charter member of Branchport Hose Company. He leaves a widow and four children Killa, Turle, Robert, and Dalton. Funeral arrangements pending.
