A laborer who sought to mar a young woman he wished to marry two years ago attacked her with a sharpened table knife while the mother and daughter were present. The assailant hid behind a large tree, using a weapon fashioned to a point.
James Genovese, a former Red Bank laborer, slashed Fannie Renacara with a sharpened table knife on Monmouth street near the Southern railroad tracks. She received medical care with several stitches. Genovese fled, pursued but escaped, and authorities searched South Amboy.
The Dunken Improvement and Realty Co purchases land at the corner of Brighton and Ocean avenues in Deal opposite Philip Lehman’s country estate. They plan immediate home-site improvements and constructing fine cottages during fall and winter. Price paid is $26,000. frontage 900 feet on Brighton leading to the beach and fishing grounds.
Citizens filed petitions with Clerk Harrison for two councilmen two justices of the peace and one constable. Democrats Republicans and Progressive Republicans named candidates for council seats and county committee posts. Slattery filed duplicate petitions while Miller and Willguss won Democratic endorsements. Long Branch sends officials to a national engineers meet as Georgiana Bowman plans marriage to Leo Janes in West Long Branch.
A New York fishing party sent a small launch named Mother from New York to a distress call off Galilee. Lifesavers led by Captain Green towed the disabled boat to its destination after the engine failed. The lifeboat’s two occupants slept at Life Saving Station No 1 and were towed ashore by fishermen who returned to retrieve their craft.
City Clerk Warwick logged petitions for GOP and Democratic contests in Sixth Ward Justice of the Peace and County Committee posts. Mayoral race in West Long Branch shows Golden seeking Republican nomination. Elliott runs unopposed in Sea Bright, Democrats nominating no candidate. Other towns list petitions for council, borough, and township posts with several incumbents not seeking reelection.
Theodore Snare of Asbury Park and his wife were thrown from a light roadster when their horse bolted on Ocean Avenue. The horse fractured a leg and died on the sidewalk as Mrs Snare suffered a severe shake up and Mr Snare injured an arm. Cycle Officer McGarvey aided at the scene and the animals were moved to a local stable.
New York reports Mayor William J. Gaynor renominated by acclamation and sailing aboard the White Star liner Battle to recuperate his health. He expects a brief England stay and aims to return by September 20, planning to catch the Lorentie for the return voyage.
The Veracruz bound Esperanza, sailing today for New York, is fully booked with Americans and foreigners aboard. President Wilson’s stance remains firm about quitting the country and a post for provisional president ahead in October is discussed as the administration faces demands. In Shrewsbury a local factory closed last year reopens under Harry L. Powers with modern machinery and about 25 workers.
The annual St. Luke's M. E. Bible School picnic at Point Pleasant features a female baseball game between two expert teams. Captains Eloise Joline and Consuelo Parslow lead lineups of local ladies with careful practice and distinctive positions listed for each player. Ban Johnson's dispensation allows the fair to proceed without delay.
Newark resident Mrs. E W Noll hosted a shore dinner during the summer at her Cedar avenue home for a small group of friends and relatives. After dining, guests toured Ocean boulevard to nearby summer resorts and back. Attendees included Miss Mary Gugel, Mrs. Emma Kavanaugh, Mrs. F W Van Note, Miss Mamie Kavanaugh, Mrs. J D Van Note, Robt Nall, Miss Hetty Gugel, and Fred Kavanaugh.
Members praised the clubs first annual outing at Brown's Old Pleasure Bay House grounds last Sunday. Organizers James F. Randolph Henry Kellar Walter Woolley William Gray John Kirk and Albert Kendig oversaw a two hundred guest event with fifty more possible. Lucienne Morrie led the bake as shellfish poultry and vegetables were served by a corps of waiters. Mrs Edward Miller won the first trophy before the bake events began.
Mrs Emmeline Pankhurst renowned England suffragist will spend October in the United States lecturing on woman suffrage and fighting white slavery. Miss Joan Wickham sails September 11 to arrange the tour and Pankhurst will visit New York Boston Washington Philadelphia Chicago Louisville and St Louis with Missouri the furthest west unless urged to go further.
Hackensack Sept. 4 Assemblyman Hennessey announces opposition to Governor Fielder in the Democratic State Senate nomination race. Peter W. Stagg of Hackensack leads the opposing ticket, signaling statewide interest in the September 23 party primary. Hennessey cites Fielder’s public service and political courage as reasons for the challenge.
Judge Henry Schoenlein presided in the Recorder's Court this morning. John Quinn, brought in by Officer Charles Edwards, faced charges of being drunk and disorderly. He received a suspended sentence with warning to leave town immediately. Lloyd Smith was sentenced to ten days in the county jail for drunkenness. Bernard Hopper and Daniel Shinn, claiming they worked at ships, were held for drunkenness while planning to sail to New York.
