Oceanic Flats Being Removed in Rumson Borough

The Flats on Oceanic Road at Second Street in Rumson borough, built about twenty five years ago by Charles Longstreet, are to be torn down and the site cleared for sale. The one hundred by one hundred foot property has housed five stores on the first floor with apartments above. Once valued at about five thousand dollars, the building drew mixed residents and some crimes, including a laudanum incident and a child lured to a basement leading to an arrest. A New York firm’s proposed purchase for better housing collapsed, and the Rumson Board of Health condemned the property last year, leaving few families there now. Meanwhile a moving accident at Peters Place caused minor damage to a skylight.
