George L. Chum, active in the insurance field for nearly thirty years, served in the Civil War starting at age fifteen and later became an early New York fireman. He remained a prominent figure in Long Branch civic affairs until his passing.
George Latham Crum a well known Long Branch resident died last night at 8:15 from diabetes at his Crum homestead. In his 69th year he had remained active recently and had come to the shore with his daughter Mercedes to prepare his Bath avenue home for summer. He left New York ill but hoped sea air would aid recovery before joining his wife and other children. He was moved to the Richard Crum homestead and tended by Drs Chasey and Shaw with his condition rapidly worsening. The end came peacefully after a day in coma as his anxious wife and children faced the loss.
The Monmouth County Scoutmasters Association elected W. A. Gassin as president Rev L L Wand as vice president C Harold Tumey as secretary and Rolland Fenimore as treasurer at its annual meeting at the Red Bank Y M C A A plan to shift the Boy Scout rally from Asbury Park to fall and to host a rally at the fair grounds next summer was discussed A committee including Rev A A McKay Oveanie Rev W Dutton Dale and Tumey was appointed to arrange the event and possibly relocate to Red Bank Y M C A soon
Jacob Corlies Williams of Central avenue is celebrated on his 86th birthday. Born near Chattle fountain, he recalls a long life at sea from Oceanport to Sandy Hook, sailing on Emaline Long Branch and Gen. Washington, later a life saving boat captain. He remains in good health with five children.
Red Bank High School hosted a Friday night seniors reception given by juniors with about 100 guests. The program featured greetings by John Lang, multiple vocal and piano solos, two acts of a play Not a man in the house, recitations, and a Casey at the Bat performance. Refreshments followed in the domestic science room, decorated with pennants and green white lighting, then dances in the main hall with Prof. Harold LaRoss providing music.

The Giants, led by Donlin’s first Baseball Park appearance, face the Cuban lineup tomorrow afternoon.
The Long Branch Checker Club met at J R Sutton’s home with wins for Warwick and Sutton. The club will face Red Bank Y M C A next Tuesday. Oakwood F C and Eagles clash at Jackson Woods with Oakwood champions 1914 set to start Bennett and Wycott. Eagles to field Jordan and Mazza. In Eecles West Virginia a mine explosion killed many workers. By noon today 35 bodies were recovered from mine 5 of the New Rivers Collleries Company. 172 men perished in Tuesday's blast. Chief inspector Henry said survivors were unlikely. gas and blast conditions fatal within minutes. Government helmeted rescuers aided the recovery effort.
