Early today in Trenton New Jersey a battle between five thousand rioters and strike breakers left fifteen injured and four fatally. The fighting started when sixty non unionists guarded trolley cars and the mob attacked with revolvers and bricks prompting full police deployment.
Montefiore G. Kahn of Long Branch was arrested at his New York office on a grand larceny complaint involving a $2450 note secured house in Long Branch and a mortgage question. Magistrate Herrman set $2000 bail after a hurried examination. no bondsman appeared and he was sent to Tombs Prison.
Chong Sam, a Chinatown laundry operator on Broadway, was tried on two indictments. convicted of atrocious assault on Charles Wing and acquitted of carrying concealed deadly weapons. Judge Foster remanded Sam for sentence next Thursday. Wing testified to being shot after visiting Sam's laundry. Sam claimed self defense. The case marks the first Chinaman conviction for breaking the peace in Monmouth County.
Prof Donald B MacMillan, a member of the Peary North Pole expedition, will speak Friday night in Long Branch. The Scotch sea lover and explorer is noted for his fluent speaking and thrilling tales of polar adventure.
Max Steinberg a Asbury Park second hand clothing dealer was found guilty of receiving stolen goods after John Shay testified he sold items from the Wheeler home robbery to Steinberg. Shay admitted transporting a trunk of goods to Steinberg's Springwood Avenue store while Steinberg claimed no prior dealings and placed him at a different location that night.
The Weather Bureau predicts increasing cloudiness with rain by Saturday evening. Moderate easterly winds accompany the arriving low over the region.
The piece advertises interlocking concrete curb made with Giant Portland cement, three feet six inches long, sixteen inches deep, top width four inches, base six inches, claiming no grass between joints and superior to blue stone. Wm H Alexander offers delivery and custom orders at 25 cents per foot. Also mentions a bake sale and bread agency notices.
Dr Harry E Shaw of Garhed Avenue entertained the Practitioners Society of Monmouth County at his Warned Avenue home last evening. Members attended a symposium of cases and a banquet prepared by the Imperial Hotel chef. Present were Drs Field Warner Rafferty Whitmore Taylor Robinson R D Bennett Beatt Beach H B Slocum Campbell Welch and Rowland.
Eatontown First Methodist women hosted a Variety supper in the church feature room. Bennett and Sacca completed their new store in the Elberon section of the city.
Charley Kahle of Branch Avenue Red Bank was arrested for selling oleomargarine. Revenue Inspector Dilldine and two assistants seized printing, coloring outfits and 1200 pounds of oleomargarine. Kahle held under $5,000 bail. he advocates a thriving,wide trade from Long Branch to Red Bank.
Dr. Frank V. Cantwell a leader in tuberculosis work and early lung disease research dies at home in Trenton after a long illness. Born February 27 1842 in Trenton he trained at St Marys St Vincents and the University of Pennsylvania. He helped push state tuberculosis policy and helped found the Glen Gardner sanatorium. He also served as county physician and performed the first abdominal operation by a Trenton doctor in 1889.
