Rioting marked the strike of 1,400 carmen in Trenton with police guards doubled. Four severely and seven seriously hurt as tracks were torn up on North Trenton. City fears troops may be called in over wage demands and reinstatement of union members.
Beaddy & Co has accepted the agency for Fleischmanns bread and rolls in New York. The famous Vietna mo ne Waker brand is promoted as the best bread in the world. On site daily starting Friday of the week.
A burglar opened the Sea Girt post office safe with nitro glycerin Tuesday night and took 50 dollars. The Sea Girt railroad station safe was also opened the previous night and 35 dollars was stolen from station receipts. Authorities suspect expert cracksmen and note repeated robberies at Sea Girt and nearby Spring Lake.
Thomas P. Fay of Long Branch was elected president for the seventh consecutive year at the State Home for Girls board meeting in Trenton. Officials named include Mrs. F. T. Rohinson secretary A. D. Carnagy treasurer Harvey R. Robinson dentist Dr William McDermott physician and J D Rue farm superintendent.
J. W. Sherman of H. B. Sherman & Sons begins building a residence on Broadway in the yuesterly section of the city.
The Young Men’s Institute of Rumson has indefinitely postponed the planned entertainment and dance on St Patrick’s night. The decision cancels the event and leaves no rescheduled date announced.
Borough Commissioners meet Monday night and approve sidewalk and curbing work on Bassett Street. The C B E Conover Company of Red Bank is authorized to establish the sidewalk grade in front of its Railroad Avenue factory.
Mrs. Rosie Cosentona wife of Louis Cosentona of 208 Poole Avenue Long Branch died Tuesday aged 26. Funeral services were held today at Holy Trinity Church with Rev Father John Proacda officiating. Burial will be at Mont Carte Cemetery. Funeral directors Hyer and Flock in charge. Special attraction Chelsea Rink Bat. pight on March 18. Sevenn.
Washington Camp No. 116 P O A celebrated its second anniversary on Lincoln avenue lodge rooms. Five new members joined: J A Stratton George Luke Arthur D Van Note Charles D Flammer and Charles H Rudloff. Attendance included visitors from Lakewood and Oakhurst. Refreshments and social time followed with officers listed.
Long Branch beat Monmouth in twelve game series at the bowling alleys. Notable is the Bennett Goethel duo defeating Shultz Wells in the top two man match. High scores include Bennett 283 and 212, Goethel 223 and 220, Schultz 212. Rev Wright Eckersley, formerly with Long Branch High School, left for conference with church debts cleared.
James E. Weaver, son of Red Bank tailor James Weaver, has been running a moving picture theatre in Raleigh, North Carolina. He returned to Red Bank yesterday to renew old acquaintances, and on Saturday he departs for Texas to enter the electrical business.
A surge of construction widens Broadway between Liberty Street and Second Avenue. William H. Parker builds a one story amusement structure while Joseph Goldstein plans a two story brick block with sixteen offices and four stores, ready by June. Contractor Isaac Cubberley handles alterations for C Koster and the Mrs Washington Wilson garage. Other projects include a Long Island mansion relocation and a 35 by 40 foot main building. Building permits for February total $33,390 with multiple new and altered structures.
At a long conference in Trenton on March 10, Lakewood residents and preventorium directors agreed on a law giving the state health board supervision over such institutions. The facility will relocate to a farm six miles north and a mile from the Central railroad, crossing Ocean into Monmouth counties. Arthur Brisbane donated the farm and buildings, and the board president Marcus M. Marks said the substitute bill is acceptable and the institution will house 400 children after moving. Also, boxer Jack Goodman, who defeated Leach Cross, plans to train in Fair Haven for another fight.
A local event features a rabbit race at Chelsea Rink with prizes awarded. The notice also mentions a large flag pole erected by Miss Garrahan on Kemp Avenue Fair Haven, work by George Adams known as Steeple Jack. Andy's Garage offers car hire by hour day or week. Johnnie Hayes of Long Branch earned second in a 20 mile race at Perth Amboy auditorium on Monday night. He led the first half before cramps slowed him, with George Forbes of Newark gaining and finishing ahead. Hayes to race Kinger three miles at Chelsea rink, Long Branch, on March 19.
Atlantic City March 10 opening day of the New Jersey M. K. Conference featured Bishop Spellmeyer addressing the gathering and officers being elected. Long Branch is set to figure prominently with new pastors lined up for key churches and transfers planned for Dr. Reed and others as names like Dr. Snyder and Rev. Marshall surface for various posts.
Mrs. Phil Daly leased her two Chelsea avenue cottages to Mesure Lebowitz and IdApschitz for a kosher boarding house, following last year’s arrangement. Herbert W. Cooper, elected exalted ruler of Long Branch Lodge 742 BPO Elks, is a surgical patient at Monmouth Memorial Hospital. At Searchlight Council Jr UAM Highlands meeting Tuesday night five new members were admitted.
Mrs. D. R. Woolley of Atlantic avenue is ill with a nervous breakdown at home after a long period of poor health. She was formerly Mrs. Luther before her marriage to Mr. Woolley.
In Pittsburg on March 10 a wall at the N. Lang & Sons bolt factory collapsed burying 25 to 30 workers. Nine killed and four seriously injured were recovered, with police fearing 10 or 11 more deaths. The previous day a fire had burned the plant, trapping men amid ruins as crowds surged for rescue.
Edward Spaeth, president of Security Savings Bank and longtime board member of the State Home for Boys, died in New York after a yearlong illness of neuritis. He had recently been in a private hospital on West Sixty-first Street and died at 10 O'clock yesterday morning. This follows the recent death of fellow board member John Guire and comes as another trustee lies ill.
A Jerusalem cable reports Natalie Maurice of Mamaroneck and Parker Moore of Terre Haute were shot by Afghan fanatics at the Mosque of Omar while touring. Maurice is slightly injured and Moore seriously hurt. Past Master Workman and W K Robbins of Robbins and Bennett depart for Atlantic City to attend the Grain Lodge AOUW annual session. Robbins will represent Seaside Lodge of the city.
William H. Hintelmann of Rumson sells Mrs A Cumming's Rumson residence on Humson road to James W Ellsworth. Property fronts 380 feet on Rumson road and 540 feet on Ward avenue, totaling nearly three acres. The house has seventeen rooms five baths and is sold fully furnished for 40000 dollars.
Patrolman Manus McGarvery is sick at his Liberty street home and has been unable to work for four weeks while Edwin L. Reed builds an addition to his Branchport avenue home. Recorder Sickles collected forty dollars in fines last month. Red Bank Borough Commissioners discussed the amount. St Luke s Church board elected a new finance committee for the year. Members include G D Seymour William R Joline Arthur H Asay Christopher Gregory and Edwin L Reed. John Daly is building a cottage on Pavilion avenue and aims to rent soon. Admission to the Peary lecture is eighty and thirty six cents. Rent can be paid at Smythes drug store fifth avenue four houses for rent. John Shay, inmate serving four years for robberies between Bay Head and Point Pleasant, testified against Max Steinberg of Springwood Avenue Asbury Park in Freehold. Shay said Steinberg bought stolen goods and funded the schemes, with an implied agreement to steal. Steinberg and his wife denied the charges as the jury deliberated.
David Roberts of Lincroft died at Monmouth Memorial Hospital last night from pneumonia. Aged about 56, he lived alone near Edward Henton's and worked for Mr. Fenton. He had few relatives and had been in Lincroft for years. The body was moved to Smith and Fay's undertaking parlors in Red Bank. Funeral plans are pending.
Mrs. Jane Allen of Headden's corner died suddenly early today from heart paralysis at age 74. She lived with her daughter Mrs. Garrett Van Ness and is survived by a son in Michigan. Funeral arrangements have not been set.
Charles Hiltbrunner, who went to California last December for health, returned to Eatontown yesterday afternoon. He is reported feeling much better. Previously he worked as a clerk in Dr. Homer T. Partree's Main street drug store.
The annual trustee election at Second Baptist Church elected Cornelius Downey John W Lawe Frisby E Laws William Andrews Joseph Gardiner Robert Tyler Walter Lattimer. The roster shows eight men chosen for the board as last week’s result.
Newcastle Penn March 10 The federation of labor ordered Philadelphia unions to seek arbitration with Tranalt Company. If they fail to settle, all state labor union members will be sanctioned on March 25. Fair Haven resident Thomas Bennett accused of trespass on Robert McCarter’s property at Ramana Dating Semana. Edward Hendrickson and Alfred work with Fair Haven merchants.
