Winged monument for Wilde grave unveiled in London studio style
An unknown admirer funded a 20 ton two block Derbyshire limestone monument by Jacob Epstein to Oscar Wilde's grave in Paris Pere La Chaise. The sculpture titled The Winged Messenger features a winged figure in Assyrian style, with Wilde's portrait on the face and an Assyrian demon motif above. Critics vary, noting bold daring and propriety concerns, while Paris is expected to accept it. Epstein, who spent years in America, has previous controversial works in London.
