Stingy Queen Bess and the Debt of Her Era
A London Telegraph summary notes Queen Elizabeth I’s stinginess harmed many. John Conley writes Sir Robert Cecil of chasing 100 pounds for beef for the royal army, warning he would be undone without order. Sir Edward Hastings, serving the queen, pawns his wife’s jewels begging sustenance in old age. Drake seized ninety bags of rice at Plymouth as the navy faced payment refusals for victuals.
