Lighthouse Keeper for Forty Years Dead at Sandy Hook
Captain Jewell, longtime Sandy Hook lighthouse keeper from June 1869 to March 1909, died after heart trouble caused by rushing stairs to keep the light burning. He served in life saving along the Jersey coast and was active in Masons and Junior Mechanics. Captain Price succeeded him, and improvements reduced labor but kept vigilance at the light.
