City officials push improvements to streets and ocean front after arrests for out of town liquor deliveries. Bathhouses ordered torn down as part of a broader enforcement drive and department reports progress on the project.
City board meeting covers sidewalk obstructions liquor deliveries by out of town dealers and street improvements. Breyens says liquor delivery violations will be charged. Al Hirschfeld and Arrowsmith report on Central depot traffic talks. Ocean and Rockwell avenues remodeling progress noted. Meeting to resume on Second avenue work.
A Merchants Express driver loses control as a gray horse runs wild, colliding with a pillar at Montmor Memorial Hospital entrance. The wagon wheel breaks, horse is driven off, and no packages are damaged though the truck carried items from two New York department stores.
The Festival of Nations organized by the Ladies' Aid Society will showcase eleven booths in the grove between the Oceanic Presbyterian Church and mange. Nations represented include United States Scotland Russia Japan Italy France Germany Holland Egypt and Weypt. Proceeds go to the ladies and the Oceanic Troop of Toy Scouts for their camping fund.
Music lovers are promised a delightful treat by pupils of Mrs. G A Parslow in St Luke's M E Church lecture room Friday evening. The program includes organ piano duets trios quartets vocal solos a young ladies chorus and an orchestra with readings by Kathryn Sweeney and Marion Blakeslee featuring Beethoven.
A sunny afternoon in Long Branch featured an innovative daytime parade with over one hundred vehicles, including autos wagons and decorated floats. Judges viewed lineups along Broadway Ocean avenue and Ocean Park with five awards per division and special prizes for top firms.
The Long Branch Military Band will give a concert in Washington Park Friday evening at eight o'clock to celebrate Booster Day. Roland Jerolamon of North Long Branch visits Mt. Vernon relatives and will be away for a few weeks. His Record route will be looked after by his brother. Specials advertised by merchants.
Rev Henry J Belting a noted Methodist teacher died yesterday on a Pennsylvania train near Arlington while traveling from Camden to Trenton He lived with his son Rev Herbert J Belting at Point Pleasant He served many Monmouth County pastorates including Matawan Freehold and Sea Bright joining the New Jersey Conference in 1861 and retiring in 1900 His son Herbert was at Sea Bright when his mother died several years ago
George Northam was re elected as cantral plumbing inspector of the Board of Health by unanimous vote. The term is one year with a 500 dollar annual salary. R C Adamson Jr withdrew after submitting his license. The board discussed a new milk ordinance and reviewed inspections of Ban Board Utilization Co butcher shops delicatessens restaurants and barber shops showing general compliance with standards.
A two hundred member committee from Holy Name Society Rosary Confraternity and Young Ladies Sodality will run the annual parish carnival July 14 to 19 on the St James Church grounds. The open air fete features decorative lights a temporary stage moving pictures with music and booths run by the societies under Rev. James A. Reynolds.
Mrs Wright Eckersley and her husband Rey Wright Eckersley were struck by a car while walking near the Rothenberg store lane. She died from skull fracture and neck laceration nine days after the Monday afternoon collision. he survived with injuries. Driver William Trudel turned himself in and faces inquest bail. The Eckersleys taught at Long Branch Public Schools years ago and Mrs Magee Eckersley was remembered by early grammar pupils. Their daughter Edna Eckersley is in Scotland.
Congressman and Mrs. Thomas G. Patten of New York are at their Pleasure Bay home for the season. Mrs. J. C. Roberts and Mrs. L. Le Vin, both of New York, also arrive. Liberty Street arrivals include Mrs. Nate Salsbury at the homestead, Sylvester Brinley, and Captain J. W. Edwards.
Marty Forney of Elizabethport leaped from a moving train near Red Bank to avoid an interview with the conductor. He was bruised, arrested for drunkenness, and told by Recorder Badeau to leave town within ten minutes or face 90 days if he returned. Local ads note a Shirt Waist Dance and the opening of the Bridgewater Inn season with music and cabaret.
The Presbytery of Monmouth met at First Presbyterian Church Asbury Park with a large crowd. John S Laverty Philadelphia passed a rigorous license exam and delivered a sermon before long-planned ordination in Columbus New Jersey. Reverend J M Buyers Tuckerton was relieved of his pastorate at his request. The 175th anniversary of New Brunswick Presbytery will be celebrated next September with an invitation to Monmouth. Samuel Ross McClements injured in a railroad accident attended and spoke briefly. He lost both legs and one arm. He remains in fragile health and could not stay to the end.
Mrs Katherine Mallard wife of Harry Mallard of Edwards Avenue died at her home yesterday at noon after a three month illness. She was 58 and survived by three children Florence Thomas and Charles and by brothers and sisters in New York and elsewhere. Funeral Friday with time to be announced. Interment in Calvary Cemetery Brooklyn under Hyer and Floek Funeral Directors.
Sixteen members of James Morris Post No 46 G A R will attend the Gettysburg celebration leaving Long Branch next Sunday at 7 35 o'clock They will depart Philadelphia Broad Street Station at 1 p m The Long Branch veterans include Past Commanders Joseph W Van Deerveer Henry Wingert William Lacour and many comrades with several others expected to join The reunion schedule designates July 1 Veterans Day July 2 Military Day July 3 Civic Day with Governor Tener July 4 National Day including laying of the peace memorial cornerstone and other ceremonies
A Red Bank burglar entered a home at night waking a matron. He seized gold cuff buttons and studs along with five or six dé mars. The thief fled with clothing and valuables secured.
A male thief entered via a back porch window at the Houghton home on Shrewsbury Avenue Red Bank early this morning stealing a complete male outfit including suit shirt underwear socks and one shoe. Police Chief Arthur Wymbs and Patrolmen Shutts and Conners investigated while a pocketbook with $5 to $6 was found. A second item notes the Jordans have a new heir a daughter born to Mrs William H Jordan of North Long Branch.
The Auditing Committee of Crystal Wave Council No 64 D of L met at the Stewart Cook residence Monday evening after a brief business session. Refreshments were served to those in attendance.
Mr and Mrs Clifford Price of Hurlington are registered at Hotel Dalton Brighton avenue for a month by the seashore. Mine Hlost Hubbard shows them around the city and countryside.
