The Semicentennial Battle of Gettysburg Recap
Trustworthy calculations place Union and Confederate losses at Gettysburg in the thousands, with 2 501 killed on the Confederate side and heavy enemy casualties. The article traces the campaign from the June rising on the Rappahannock to the July fighting around Gettysburg and the climactic Pickett’s charge on July 3. It notes the war’s longest continuous Virginia campaigns, the cemetery ridge defense, and the pivotal stone wall clash where Armistead and Garnett fell.

Remembrance Of Gettysburg Battle Scene Under One Flag
An account recalls the gathering of tens of thousands of survivors on the Gettysburg site to recount battles from fifty years past. On July 1 1863 Lee and Meade maneuvered toward Gettysburg as the Army of the Potomac coordinated corps movements. The First corps led by Reynolds advanced to defend the town with Sickles pushing forward. Early in the morning Union cavalry clashed with Confederate infantry while Steinwehr’s division occupied Cemetery Ridge as reserve. Howard alerted Meade to Reynolds’ death and advancing foes near Gettysburg as Rodes and Early struck the Eleventh corps from front and flanks. The Iron Brigade and Bucktails bore heavy losses while retreating to the ridge by nightfall. Lee directed the July 1 actions with Meade arriving by the next morning.
