Law prompts critique of New Jersey Emancipation celebration
Critics say the New Jersey law for a 50th anniversary Emancipation Proclamation event directs a Philadelphia celebration with a seven member commission including three colored members. The plan, backed by Rev. Dr. L W. L. Roundtree, would yield a joint Pennsylvania-NJ observance centered in Philadelphia, prompting calls to hold a separate New Jersey event at Bordentown's Manual Training and Industrial School for Colored Youth. The commission actions and HQ setup in Philadelphia advance plans shared with Pennsylvania officials.
