Empress of Ireland Disaster Near Rimouski Sinks After Collision

A dense fog shrouded the St Lawrence as the Empress of Ireland rammed the collier Storstad off Watner Point near Rimouski Quebec. Ninteen minutes later the liner sank with about 1437 souls aboard as rescue vessels and crews rushed to the scene. Survivors faced exposure and injuries while townspeople at Rimouski opened hospitals and aid stations.

Agriculture notes warn farmers against burning woodlands and logged lands

Washington reports from June 4 warn farmers about the dangers of burning off lands as studies by the Forest Service show humus and soil fertility are lost. Guidance covers dandelion control by thickening grass, salt on roots, or replanting, with iron sulfate discouraged. Also warns housewives about salicylic acid in preserves and notes a quote from One Man Returns by Harold Spender.
