Fahnestock Dies in New York at 79 a longtime financier
Harris Charles Fahnestock, longtime financier and philanthropist tied to Jay Cooke era banks, died in New York at 457 Madison Avenue after a complex illness. He was 79. Survivors include a son and daughter. He aided the Nurses Training School and the New York Post Graduate Hospital, gave 50000 to the Cathedral of St John the Divine, and held numerous posts in banking and rail interests. He served as treasurer of the Washington and Georgetown Railroad and helped build the Northern Pacific Railroad before joining First National Bank of New York. He belonged to many clubs and church organizations and was a vestryman at St Thomas Episcopal Church.

Long Branch Theft Conviction Ties House Fire to Stolen Goods
Carmine Aschettino was convicted before Judge Foster in Freehold of grand larceny for stealing goods valued at $800 from the vacant Bath avenue cottage of Sirs Julian Callahan, which was set ablaze last winter. Detectives traced the stolen items to Aschettino’s Waters street home after a failed escape attempt and subsequent arrest at a Tabor street residence. John and Elwood DeWitt were found guilty only of receiving a horse stolen from Charles M. Parker at West Long Branch on November 1. The theft involved Harmond Cheeseman, whose own guilty plea tied the participants to the horse trade kept by Blwood Dewitt.
