Butter Gasoline and Milk Abuses and Misuse of Liquid Quart Measures Said To Have Been Curbed. Fair Exhibition Last Fall. 191 Prosecutions During Past Year, 268,066 Scales Tested and $4,320.25 in Fines Collected Throughout New Jersey.
State Superintendent Waldron reports strong progress since 1911 reform. New rules require standard baskets of 2 4 6 8 16 and 32 quarts and enforce permanent capacity marks. Proposals include standard dry quart and pint boxes, police power for inspectors, and stricter proof of intent to defraud to curb false measures.
Former City Collector William R. Joline of Branchport Avenue arrives in Oxford North Carolina to hunt deer and quail for two weeks or more. Captain Miller Newman, who has wintered in ford for years, advised him on bagging. Also notes Hiram Slocum of Jersey City, hospitalized after surgery at St Francis Hospital, recovering slowly. Hey mer Pekowsky of Springdale Avenue sued the New Jersey Central Railroad for injuries from a collision at the Chelsea avenue crossing on the shore route last July. The jury returned a verdict for $1,000 after an initial demand of $5,000. Pekowsky suffered head injuries and spent four days in hospital. the railroad may appeal.
The Red Bank Y M C A presents the Aida Quartet at Red Bank High School auditorium. The New York ensemble features Miss Edna White trumpet and world renown credentials, with Miss Norma Sauter violinist and Miss Cord Sauter celloist, joined by Miss Ruth Wolfe piano. Proceeds support local association expenses.
Philadelphia dispatch reports President-elect Wilson denying any inference that William J. Bryan will be Secretary of State and denying sending him a message via Colonel House. He calls morning papers mistaken and notes cabinet decisions are unchanged. Wilson plans a New York visit for a fitting suit for his inauguration.
The twenty second grand jury returns forty indictments for the January term at Freehold. After arraignments, some defendants pleaded guilty, others not guilty. several cases set for trial in February. Multiple local residents face charges ranging from assault and battery to theft, forgery, and robbery. Nine jailed inmates were discharged. numerous trials scheduled for February.
The twenty second annual charity ball at the Lyceum last night showcased fine decorations, exquisite gowns, turkey dinner, and a modern intermission program by local talent. Attendance surpassed last year with 300 to 350 guests. Artists Sodeman and Lindhardt created a woodland scene with green and white roses across ball room and stage. Prof J Pitman West orchestra performed from ten o’clock. Leon Cubberley and wife led a grand march for over sixty couples. twenty four dances followed a two part program. The funeral for Mrs. Susie F. Worthley wife of George Worthley was held at her Slocum Place home yesterday afternoon at 1 30. Rev Alfonso Dare conducted services with a quartet singing In That City and Some Day That Silver Cord Shall Break. A D of P delegation from Waneta Council No 13 performed grave ceremony. Interment at Greenlawn Cemetery under Funeral Director William H Morris Jr. Ads note upcoming Sugar Bowl Cocoanut and shoe bargains.
A Black defendant was promptly found guilty in a hotel burglary trial. The victim, described as a well-known brother of the county collector, testified that the shock confined him to his home for about three weeks after the incident.
Paul Francis was found guilty of breaking and entering Charles H. Greene's Third Avenue Hotel at Long Branch and stealing $18 from Nicholas J. MacDonald of Lakewood. MacDonald identified Francis as the man with a revolver who forced him to surrender money. A sentence in Judge Foster's court is planned next Thursday. Detective W. D. Walling helped secure the confession. A second item notes the death of Helen A. Oakes, daughter of Roll and Mrs. J. A. Oakes, from Pitman, NJ, at a Tren ton hospital with interment slated for Mana squan cemetery.
About two hundred people attended the Monmouth County Horticultural Society annual reception at Red Men’s Hall Oceanic. Guests played games, enjoyed an elaborate banquet, and danced to Prof. W. Wyman’s orchestra. Local artists performed vocal numbers and souvenirs were given to numerous Red Bank and area residents.
In a road trotting race before Joseph W. Tomlingon’s Hotel in Lincroft on Wednesday afternoon William Van Pelt of Keyport defeated Edward Fenton of Lincroft. The Keyport horse won three straight half mile heats and its owner collected the $50 side bet in front of about 150 spectators.
The First Baptist Church holds Sunday services led by Rev. J. B. R. Folsom. He preaches at 10 30 am on What Have I that God Can Use and at 7 80 pm on If I Am Lost the Reason Why. All seats are free and strangers are welcome.
The French liner Mexico, which lost a propeller blade in a blizzard 150 miles southeast of Sable Island, sent eight SOS calls and was towed by the Leyland liner Devonian. All aboard are safe, and Devonian expects to reach Halifax late tonight. The page also lists local advertisements and theater notices.
Three highwaymen who robbed a man in this city have been captured. All prisoners implicate themselves with damaging admissions. One testifies to having received the money and another the pin.
Detectives nabbed three of the four alleged highwaymen in the Crean robbery on Broadway near Mill street. Henry Thlowth Ollie Knox and Raphael Degenito are jailed with charges forwarded to the grand jury. Annabelle Francis detained as a material witness. gunman Heath identified as accomplice.
Funeral services for the late Otto Vaugoin will be held from his home at 157 Broadway on Sunday February 2 1913 at 2 PM. Members of Long Branch Lodge, Empire Lodge, Ocean Lodge, K of P, Long Branch Court, F of A and allied organizations are invited to attend.
