Two highwaymen assaulted an Elberon resident on a city street Saturday night. The victims face was badly scratched in the struggle as the robbers used tactics to overpower him. Police seek leads and describe the street crime as a brazen daytime robbery.
John Bishop of Pearl street was robbed on the return trip from Long Branch near midnight. Two assailants grabbed him from behind on Pearl street by Cohen's market, rifled his pocketbook containing over $56 and a small amount of change and a pocket knife. A $460 check was cashed earlier in the city, leading to speculation they waited for his homeward walk. Bishop found a ten-cent piece this morning at the scene.
Arrangements are complete for a big ball in Bowser's Hall Sea Bright tomorrow night under the Metropolitan Band. An eight piece orchestra will provide music and a two part dance program will be offered. Refreshments will be served and proceeds go toward new band uniforms for Red Bank Sea Bright and nearby members. The band invites engagements. contact secretary George F Wilson Red Bank.
The jury found not guilty in Freehold on a discrimination suit by Viola Wilson a New York resident described as light colored asserting denial of admission to the Broadway Theatre on August 26 and September 10 last year. She sought $500 from each defendant Henry Rosenberg Charles Byrne and Jesse Green and would have earned up to $1,500 if the verdict had favored her. The case noted she was directed to the balcony when the house was crowded and declined to sit there.
The social highlight of the season in Farmingdale was the marriage of J Walter Butcher and Myrtle F Hall. The ceremony occurred at the M E Church with a large local turnout and a long list of family, friends, and attendants. Music by Prof J Pitman West accompanied the service as the couple began their life together.
Ocean Grove borough bill sails through the House by a 49 to 10 vote as the legislature closes a busy week. Seventeen bills pass both houses with several more ready for action next session, including anti revolver measures and funding for the Women’s Reformatory.
The three act comedy The New Woman staged by The Philathea Class of the First Baptist Church at Bong Branch Opera House drew praise for its smooth delivery and large audience despite a stormy night. Casts included Miss Pink T Hykight, Mrs J P Hood, Miss Rose Lightfoot, and others with明 Harmony. patrons enjoyed a program of local talent and a lineup of short features following the play. In Atlantic Highlands a funeral was held for Dominic Worullbewsky at St Agnes Church with interment at Mt Olivet Cemetery Middletown.
A $5000 damage suit is being tried in Freehold before Justice Nelson Y. Dungan. Heymer Peskowsky, of Springdale avenue, alleges negligence by the C R R Co on July 15. He was injured when a delivery wagon wrecked at railroad tracks as a safety gate failed to lower and the engine approached. He was treated at Monmouth Memorial Hospital and later pursued the case with Thomas Fay for the complainant. Witnesses include city engineer J. Wesley Seaman and doctors C L Henriquez and S H Nichols. The defense also presents several witnesses. the case remains ongoing. Regina Heiles of Long Branch sold her farm at Tinton Falls to Henry C. Penny of New York, who plans improvements and relocation.
Final plans for the twenty second annual charity ball for the hospital were completed. Preparations are ready including cranberry and turkey menus and two fattened turkeys prepared for service after midnight. The event is organized by Auxiliary No. 1 with active committees working for weeks to ensure a delightful evening at the Lyceum. The feature will be gowns worn by the women and the opening number by J Pitman West orchestra at 9 30.
Eight strikers from New York and Brooklyn were rounded up within an hour after yesterday afternoon’s riot in Red Bank. They faced charges of atrocious assault, were held on $300 bail, and sent to Freehold jail after hearings at Borough Hall. Wounds were reported for Salvalski and Silver. Rouswitz was the foreman.
In Trenton on January 30, Speaker Taylor censured Assemblyman Oliver Holcombe for leaving the chamber without permission during a call and denied his request to be recorded as voting against Ocean Grove Bill 7. Holcombe claimed he left with the sergeant at arms, inducing laughter as the dispute over permission and under call rules was clarified.
Members of the Long Branch Local Patrolmen's Benevolent Association held their fifth annual banquet at the Commercial Grill last evening. The six tables were prettily decorated with flags of all nations and holly, making the grill a festive scene. City officials and various department members joined the officers at the festive board, including Mayor Bryant B Newcomb and others.
A lengthy report to the Public Utilities Commission by Philander Betts, Chief Inspector, estimates a $90,000, year and a half study to evaluate New Jersey electric lighting costs for rate reasonableness. Passaic and Paterson press for lower gas and electric prices. gas cuts already saved about a million dollars annually. The hearing drew criticism that Betts favored the Public Service Corporation. The Asbury Park auxiliary raised 700 dollars for Monmouth Memorial Hospital at its annual meeting. Treasurer Mrs N H Buchanan reported. The 100 member group, founded 12 years ago, reelected officers including President Mrs Melvina Sill and Treasurer Mrs N B Danhonon. They plan to support a bed in the women's ward.
Edmund Lamy of Saranac Lake seeks a series of ice racing battles against ex-Champion Morris Wood of Long Branch on Saranac Lake. Lamy, eldest of three brothers, aims to bring all three to championship status, pleasing their father. Funeral services for A J Cook held at Leonardo, with Civil War veteran laid to rest in Bay View Cemetery.
