Mrs Charles Williams nee Madden of South Broadway suffered extensive burns from a lamp explosion and kerosene flare at her North Broadway home. Dom inick Kelly, a boarder, burned his hands assisting as she was rushed to Monmouth Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
The fog that smothered New York for 24 hours lingered into today but cleared enough to let ocean liners and sound steamers proceed to ports. Ships including Rotterdam Kroonland Lauren tic Minneonka Cincinnati and California with over 4000 aboard waited at Ambrose Lightship while sound steamers anchored at Hunter's Point and ferries and crowding commuters faced slow navigation in East and North Rivers.
Elias Seabrooke of Keyport died after a brick wall at Yonker's bakery on Main Street collapsed. Coroner Marrys C Fay certified death accidental and ordered burial from Bede's parlors. Seabrooke, aged, left a wife and five children. funeral arrangements noted with Hyer and Flock Undertakers.
Thomas L. Slocum’s Senate confirmation clears path to take over the Long Branch post office next week. Woolley’s last day slated for Saturday with Monday reporting. Slocum to join new Federal building work as contractors sign with the Treasury.
Miss Carrie Jerolamon daughter of the late Abram Jerolamon died at her home 1 Columbia place last night at 8 30 from tuberculosis of the throat. She was forty and survived by two sisters Mrs Benjamin Reed and Mrs John White and two brothers Willard H Jerolamon and Abram Jerolamon. The funeral will be Friday at 2 PM from Asbury M E Church with interment in Greenlawn Cemetery conducted by John G Bexton Funeral Director.
Progress Council No. 3 officers were installed at Odd Fellows Hall. Daniel Edwards became the new councilor and urged member activity. Henry Jo Mne and Joseph A. Burns were elected as Supreme Council delegate and alternate. A big April celebration and Oceanport Auto Bus trips were discussed. services suspended due to heavy roads.
Ex Chief Joseph I. Kingsland reports 1913 losses near 98 260.45 with 365 700 in force. Forty seven fire alarms were box alarms and 14 incendiaries occurred. He backs improved fire alarm system auto track and tractor for engines and urges enforcement of state fire marshal laws.
Fair Haven Borough Council debated taking over the steamboat dock currently owned by the Fair Haven Dock Association. A petition signed by 87 voters urging borough ownership was submitted by Overseer of the Poor Henry Lehneider and given to Public Units. The item appears on the sixth page.
A heated State House hearing on a constitutional amendment for women’s suffrage drew equal numbers of supporters and opponents. Speakers included Mrs. Desha Breckenridge and Rather Wise for suffragists, while Miss Clara Vesein led the antis. The measure is expected to pass both houses despite the lively debate.
In Trenton on January 28 the House of Assembly debated amending Rule 71 to permit second readings after March 2 1914 with unanimous consent. The Kirkpatrick proposal, backed by Democrats, passed replacing the California divided session plan. The ruling sparked partisan clashes as speakers and leaders clashed over procedure and tactics.
Five Chattle boys travel to New Jersey on Saturday for a state high school meet under Central High School. Four form a relay squad with D Glenn Riddle leading, W Cavaliere second, Joseph Perri third, Everett Covert fourth, and Valjean Dornell running the seventy yard dash. Riddle also competes in the high jump.
Last night the Oakwood Field Club basketball team was defeated by Troop B Cavalry of Red Bank 47 to 21 on Red Bank's court. The Oakwoods struggled with a large court and girders hindering passes and defense while Cavalry proved the faster and heavier squad. Next they face Wide Awaken or Little Silver after already beating Little Silver in a prior contest.
A runaway horse ran near the fence and hedge along Thomas R Woolley’s Rockwell Avenue property this morning. A Louis Vaduano driver from Jeffrey Street was involved.
A constable reports a collection of various artillery and related items found. The text notes stolen goods from a boat works have been identified and secured.
Captain Edwards linked items stolen from Lewis beet works to Lovelace and Horner after three motor boats were stripped and carted away. A wheel and carburetor were recovered and police planned a search of the Lovelace shack for more plunder. Lovelace has been detained as investigators pursue a grand jury warrant and further identification of stolen stock.
