Princeton and Hazel L. sail this afternoon for the North and South championship at Shrewsbury. IMP wins race for commodore's pennant. Plans for a big ice carnival at Red Bank tomorrow morning and afternoon have been completed.
The championship race between North and South Shrewsbury Club toe yachts runs this afternoon over the North Shrewsbury course. Prizes include the Commodore's Pennant. contingents from Ingenue and Pb. N. C. withdraw, Hagel L. sails Hazel, Prince ton sailed by Ash er Wardell, with Duryee. Imp wins the day in the ice yacht event, start 2 50, finish 3 09 40. Plan for Red Bank ice carnival announced with skaters and six events.
James B. Morris Post No 46 G A R held an old fashioned camp fire at G A R Hall with Department Commander John W Bodine of Camden and several associates. Senior Vice Commander Farman Reynolds Junior Vice Commander 8 G Garretson Assistant Adjutant General George W Barrett and Judge Advocate John A Boren were present along with 15 members from K Hall Post Asbury Park and five from B Birney Post Hed Bank. Over two score Morris Post members attended with speeches and feasting as department officers greeted visitors and members to the gathering.
John P. Dullard, a Trenton newspaper man and Democrat, elected state librarian succeeding Henry C. Buchanan after a 15 year tenure. The switch reflects a Democrat dominated Library Commission and Mercer County backing for Dullard, who will serve a five year term at $3,000.
The second set of twenty games in the Monmouth County checker championship featured Christian Berge of Red Bank and Cyril Smack of this city. Berge led with wins and draws, while Smack won two and drew two. three games remained in the series. The next four games are scheduled at St James Parish Hall, with Hank wit’s team traveling to clash across boards.
Louis Tice, about 45, was fatally injured when his clothing tangled in shafting while cementing a hole in a partition at Matawan tile works. He died at Monmouth Memorial Hospital shortly after, leaving a wife and five children. Debris tore limbs, with feet and a fractured arm, as he was drawn into the machinery. Funeral home arrangements followed and coroner Morris investigated the death.
Washington reports W H Kelly, president of the National Letter Carriers Association, likely to be named Postmaster of Brooklyn by President Wilson. Brooklyn political boss John H McCooey opposes Kelly, but Tamany leaders back the nomination. Kelly previously helped establish free city delivery in Long Branch in 1899 and has led the association for three terms. Local carriers recall his popularity and his visit with secretary association official to Slocum Place.
President Wilson sent the name Thomas L. Slocum to succeed Anthony T. Woolley as Long Branch postmaster. Woolley’s term ends today and Slocum is expected to take office within a week after Senate confirmation. Slocum, a Democratic leader, heads T. L. Slocum & Co. coal and wood, has fire service, banking and civic ties, and lives at 820 Broadway with his family.
London January 24 violence marked the strike of coal drivers and porters. Wagons operated by strike breakers were stoned as police guarded non striking workers. Nine thousand clerks joined by noon. more may join. Car shortages hit hotels and manufacturing sectors.
Reports circulated that the Tyne built steamer Bulgarian Prince anchored off Sandy Hook was on fire after signaling for water. Lifesavers denied any fire signals later. Nearby tank steamer Herman Frasch assisted the freighter. In other items, Myron L Campbell’s hennery was robbed of sixteen fowl, and Eugene Bouvier, 82, father of a local resident, died in Farmingdale. A Young Men’s Club planned at Intermedial School with about sixty names. George Watson married Sarah Dremmond in Red Bank. Professor Harold Allstrom of Red Bank entertains, and Dr. P P Rafferty failed to address a Calvary troop. Mrs. Hugh Reilly died at 55 in Brielle. troopers held an evening drill in Manasquan.
Col George W Goethals chief engineer of the Panama Canal consents to be New York City Police Commissioner, but plans to remain in Panama. Mayor Mitchel pressed Perkins to discuss the offer. Goethals, an army officer, did not want the job. Continued on page six.
Frank Leighton of this city defeats Roy Wit of Asbury Park in a pocket billiards Green 7 match at Tirday Hotel. Wainright leads early but Leighton closes gaps. final frames show Leighton 61 to 75 and Wainright leading at times before Leighton falters. The event, organized to pair Leighton and Wainright in a friendly series, drew lively rooting and noise from spectators.
A mixed field of professionals and amateurs competed in a 160 target shoot at Lakewood. Notables included Neatsone Piajniéw and T A Davis of New York. Apgar led with 122 breaks, Davis 109, and W B Matthews of Trenton was top amateur with 126 breaks. Event tied to broader Mexican canal tensions and U S military steps.
