Mexican rebel commander Sur was surprised by a federal assault as the army's position at Torreon appeared critical. An influx of Japanese is reported in Mexico City with no clear reason given beyond their presence in the capital.
Mexico City Jan 10 President Huerta ordered an inquiry into reports that talks to renew negotiations with the United States might lead to his removal from office. The report, attributed to a cabinet member, sparked speculation on the political stability of Huerta's regime. Japanese newcomers draw attention as authorities seek to explain their influx amid tensions. In Juarez, rebel General Benavides received word of Villa's army possibly attacked from Torreon, provoking ferment at rebel headquarters. Villa’s leadership remains seen as crucial. In Texas, skirmishes between Villa’s rebel guard and federal scouts near Ojinaga were reported, with no major engagement anticipated. Fires destroyed the Iroquois and Manitoba hotels in Winnipeg, $250,000 loss, guests escaped unharmed.
In Freehold court Judge Foster deferred action for two weeks on 16 year old John Applegate of West Grae and 17 year old Harold White of Bradley Park accused of robbing multiple Asbury stores and the Asbury Park and Bradley Beach depots. White’s bail was set at 500 dollars, with his mother Ida Appleggie attempting to post bail unsuccessfully. the youths have prior court appearances. Also noted is Parker's Theatre Tonight with advertised features and showtimes.
Frank Morris of Sea Girt, tester of the Newport monoplane, achieved his first ascent at the State Camp Sea Girt. Willig Wood piloted during a 109 foot flight, covering about a mile before landing. Earlier trials reached 16 to 20 feet. a minor tire cut during descent did not dampen the day's success. Morris plans future runs toward Shallow Point if weather permits.
Eric Nor Dell long connected with the Auditor's Department of the New York and Long Branch Railroad and a Troy Polytechnic graduate wed Miss Matt Maurer daughter of Auditor Thomas D Maurer in Read ing Pa. The couple plans a short honeymoon before returning to the city.
At a New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce West meeting in Jersey City on January 10, trustees urged national and state governments to act immediately to prevent a repeat of the Sea Bright catastrophe. They called on Congress to order the U S cars to conduct a survey to determine proper procedures.

Department Commander John Bodine of Camden will visit James J. Morris Post 46 at G A R Hall on January 22. Arrangements for a reception were made at the post meeting held Thursday night plus an invitation extended to Atlantic Highlands Keyport and Asbury Park posts. Clam stews will close the meeting. The post installed officers for 1914 with Henry C. Maps as Commander and others named.
A convention of Episcopal Sunday school teachers from Monmouth county gathered at Trinity Church Red Bank Thursday afternoon. Delegates from Asbury Park Sea Bright Freehold Long Branch and Atlantic Highlands attended. A 4 pm business meeting preceded a lecture on Child's Study by Mrs Let ter Bradner followed by supper. Rev Dr Conover of Newark spoke at the 7 pm meeting on the Life of Christ. St James Church in this city was represented by several ladies.
Police Commissioner Arrowsmith and city officials refute a Broadway Theatre ad claiming Mayor Elliott will head a Sunday benefit for Sea Bright sufferers. They say the statement is false, unauthorized, and would violate Sunday laws. Public rights require weekday charity events. no show will be permitted on Sundays.
Alton Voorhees dies from gas asphyxiation in Red Bank boarding house and will be buried from his home tomorrow afternoon. Sheridan bowling team, of which he was champion, will attend in a body, with a funeral trip from Red Bank in an automobile.
Captain George H. Green of 82 Bath Avenue celebrated his 93rd birthday at his daughter’s home in Asbury Park. Long Branch residents and local dignitaries attended. tributes poured in from church leaders, doctors, and civic groups. Green, a charter member and first treasurer of Long Branch Council No 1, showed strength after recent storm damage and enjoyed phone calls from friends in Long Branch.
The Standard Oil tug Comet with 25 aboard sprang a leak 27 miles from Nantucket Lightship and the Revenue Cutter Acushnet was dispatched. Bound for Chatham with a loaded barge, the ship reported tank seams opening and the crew to consider firing the boiler to prevent an explosion.
