60 000 in General Strike Called Today in Philadelphia

Philadelphia reports sixty thousand workers pledged to join a sympathetic strike led by Central Labor Union President John J. Murphy who was arrested and bailed. A mass march to City Hall planned for Monday seeks recognition of strikers. The Philadelphia Rapid Transit Co. refused to arbitrate and will recall workers on preexisting terms by Tuesday. Substantial car service losses and fare declines with 350 058 fares collected yesterday illustrate the financial impact. Cavalry and state police patrol the city while Mayor Reyburn and Governor threaten National Guard deployment if needed.
