Former Monmouth Senator Terhune named to the error court by Governor Wilson to replace Judge Garret Vroom of Trenton who resigned last Saturday. The New Jersey Senate swiftly confirmed the appointment as Senator Slocum conveyed the decision and voiced satisfaction with the selection.
Governor Wilson sent to the Senate a slate of five nominees including Henry Terhune for the Court of Errors and Appeals and James C. Connolly for Union County Common Pleas. Other picks are Mercer County Prosecutor and Elizabeth area judges. The list follows party lines with significant local contests among Union County Democrats.
Randell Underwear Co will open a branch at the Good building on Broadway formerly Horton Ice Cream. Machinery is being installed. The Long Branch plant will start with about twenty machines and may rise to 109 or 150. The firm will make ladies underwear.
The New Jersey Editorial Association renamed itself the New Jersey Press Association at its semi annual meeting in Trenton. Guests included President-elect Woodrow Wilson, Chester S. Lord of the New York Sun, and Bishop Joseph F. Berry. More than 300 attendees, including many legislators, heard remarks on journalism’s influence. Wilson spoke later at the luncheon but was called away.
The twenty seventh annual Phil Daly Hose Company ball at the Lyceum drew a large, stylish crowd with many out of town visitors. The six piece orchestra led by Prof J Pitman West played popular selections while firemen in dress uniforms mingled. John Heldt Jr acted as floor manager with Edward J Miller and a committee. The Dalys provided a lavish banquet supper with abundant varieties and excellent service overseen by steward Gustav Schlemm.
Richard Pierson 48 a painter living with Albert Smith in High Street was found dead in bed after a late Sunday meal. Hemorrhage of the lungs suspected. coroner's inquiry not required. Funeral Friday at 1:30 with Rev Nash officiating at St James' and Glenwood Cemetery.
Eatontown public school thrives under Principal Frank Shermer A M with 240 pupils and strong exam results. Shermer praises a dictionary offered by the paper as concise up to date and highly useful for scholars.
A Garfield avenue dinner hosted by Morris Judas at the Elks Home was praised as outstanding by Feeders Club members. Three at the table from Club No. 2 planned another feast in three weeks, with toastmaster Charles Rosencrans coordinating remarks.
The New Jersey Senate approved Income Tax Bill 13 by a 12 to 109 vote with Fielder opposing on the Republican side and Nichols supporting for the Democrats. Lieutenant Governor McDermott of Kentucky, in town to see the President elect, spoke to the chamber. The Assembly also advanced a measure to raise election officers’ pay to city levels.
M Van Buren Smock of Park Place Red Bank becomes sole owner of the Red Bank steam laundry on White Street after purchasing the interest of Albert C Smith who due to ill health plans a southern trip this week He may move to California if climate proves unsuitable The shop will retain its employees and continue as before with Smock as owner and supervisor at the First Presbyterian Sunday School in Red Bank Majestic Theatre Monmouth 8 Red Bank offers moving pictures nightly
State House dispatch reports Speaker Taylor set Friday February 14 at the Lyceum for a public debate with Mr Hope on the Shore Court question. Hope has accepted and the Long Branch Board of Trade will organize details. Taylor argues for district courts. Hope claims branch courts save money and time. Mrs Legge, Monmouth Memorial Hospital, shows improvement. Long Branch inauguration special train to Washington offered.
The New Jersey Assembly expresses congratulations to Ireland as the English House of Commons passes Home Rule. A Bracken Essex resolution lauds the Irish people amid applause. Plus notes on Long Branch delegates at a Plainfield charities meeting and a postponed Algonquin Club Indian dance due to Monmouth Beach Casino repairs.
Prof Frederick K Ball presented a lecture recital on Wagner Die Meistersinger to a general opera audience. He praised its gaiety tunefulness and clear story noting German humor and the romantic Walter Eva thread within a satirical portrayal of sixteenth century Nuremberg life. The talk highlighted Hans Sachs and the Prize Song with pictures adding to the analysis. Next Monday will analyze Das Rhinegold from the Ring cycle with subsequent installments for We Walkure Siegfried and Gotterdammerung in order.
State House Trenton February 4 191s Senator Slocum introduced a bill for Monmouth County authorizing second class counties to spend by majority vote of freeholders up to 100000 to locate and equip a branch courthouse outside the county seat the Monmouth County Branch Court Bill.
J E B Norton and James Duffy both of Jersey City pleaded not guilty before Justice Sickles in Red Bank to grand larceny for breaking a freight car box and stealing eight pairs of shoes. Bail set at 500 dollars each. awaiting grand jury action.
Edward VonKattengell, well known trapshooter and garage proprietor, is confined to his home on Monmouth Street in Red Bank with a light attack of smallpox. He was seized Sunday afternoon. His condition is not alarming and recovery is confidently expected.
Eulalie Murphy of Belmar recovered from a long illness due to appendicitis at Monmouth Memorial Hospital. She was between life and death for a period but left the hospital today to return home.
Union representatives from New York agitated workers for two weeks leading to an indefinite factory closure in Red Bank. Local authorities report halted production and contract disputes with Eisner D Uniform. No injuries noted as employees protest outside the facility.
After an all night meeting of Italian workers at the Moblog factory in Red Bank a general strike was called. About 145 employees including Americans Poles and Italians joined in a morning gathering to halt work. The workers demand nine hour days higher wages and a union shop. The plant will stay shut indefinitely as negotiations proceed.
A defective flue caused a kitchen fire at the Grand Central Hotel Ocean Avenue Sea Bright this morning. Fire broke out about 7 4 o clock and was under control minutes later. Damage estimated 300 to 400 dollars with coverage by insurance. George Buhler manages the hotel. Sea Bright Fire Department responded swiftly. Empire Theatre Red Bank advertises daily moving pictures and vaudeville features.
