Slocum Appointed Monmouth County Common Pleas Judge
President of the Senate John W. Slocum of Monmouth County was appointed Common Pleas Judge by Governor James I. Fielder to succeed Judge Foster who resigned. Slocum resigns from the Senate to take the bench immediately, leaving a temporary vacancy until January 12 when Henry B. Ackerson Jr. will be sworn in. Slocum will take the oath in Freehold and preside at jury drawing, with his first court Thursday.

Edward T. Welch, Long Branch’s oldest resident, died at midnight at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rupert Marshall in Long Branch after years of poor health. Born February 24, 1819 in Jersey City, he recalled Lafayette’s 1825 visit and later built a long career as a tinsmith in Oceanport. Funeral at 1:30 PM Thursday at the Marshall home with Elder L B Giles officiating. burial in West Long Branch. Survivors include Alpha Welch, Tucker Welch Jr, Frank Welch, Elizabeth Welch, and Frances McKaig.

Fred J. Wilcox, local American Express agent, was robbed in darkness near the Central depot. The thief grabbed the pocketbook containing about $450 to $600 and fled toward the freight depot. No gun was shown and no clues or description of the suspect were obtained.
