A fatal blaze at an New York apartment house leaves three dead and three injured. One man was turned away and held as a possible incendiary. Authorities say the fire destroyed the lodging house’s seven apartments and caused extensive damage.
Cincinnati reports six people burned to death in an incendiary blaze at West End Turner Hall owned by the Salvation Army. Wallie Mayer of the Chicago American League team aided firefighters and police in rescuing 18 occupants. Suspect Fred Mayers, linked to threats over denied entry, was arrested soon after. Loss estimated at sixty thousand dollars.
New York fire killed three and fatally wounded one as a five story building at 366 Amsterdam Avenue burned. Four were injured and ten trapped on upper floors were rescued after firefighters battled the blaze. A second fire at 94th Street and Central Park West caused 160000 in damage though all tenants escaped.
Asbury Park battles an ocean pier proposal with opposition from Mayor-elect William A. Berry pending a full investigation of promoter resources. Public Grounds Commission approved the project at a Saturday meeting, with Commissioner Miller the lone dissent. In City Hall yesterday Harry Brown, a colored boy, faced a recorder's court on a disturbance charge related to an egg throwing incident at the Grand Theatre last Friday. Brown admitted carrying eggs. he was paroled to his father until juvenile court disposition. Also, David Cook was fined $5 for disorderly conduct on Abbotsford avenue after a beer bottle altercation with Emma Robinson. Recorder Arrowsmith ordered Emma Robinson to leave the city within two days. Richard Donnell, a Brielle fisherman, was fined $5 for drunkenness after claiming knockout drops. Advertising notices for local entertainment and eateries appear, including the a la Carte Restaurant in Red Bank and acts by Dave Johnson and Prof Lajos at the Globe Hotel.
A daring late night attempt to steal a Ford runabout belonging to Charles H. Green Jr. was thwarted by a discreet shut off device. The car was pushed from Greene's garage toward Belmont Avenue before being abandoned at daylight. Two clues exist as investigators review whether the robbers planned to use the Ford to aid a larger theft. Washington news notes a pending Seaman's Bill amendment affecting several lines, with Scully stating the Keansburg Patten Merchant's Sandy Hook and Iron Steamboat lines will remain unaffected.
The Blaisdell & Edwards electrical firm reports a bright year in 1914 with major contracts. Projects include a fourteen station intercom system and a watchman's clock network underground. The Commerce Board approved advertising measures for Long Branch and urged the Public Utility Commission to consider trolley paving on Second Avenue. A liberal 1914 advertising budget was urged, checks for 1912 and 1913 carnival debts will be mailed, and factory site discussions continued. Hyman Bergman was elected to membership as meetings plan for January 5th and a New Year letter to members is promised.
Robert Sinclair 53 died at his home corner Seventh avenue and Columbus place after four months of stomach trouble. Born in Lanar Scotland he lived in the city 26 years was a cabinet maker and carpenter. He was an elder of the First Presbyterian church and leaves a widow, two children, a brother in Portchester and three sisters in Scotland. Funeral Friday at 2 pm from the house, interment at Glenwood Cemetery under John G. Sexton.
Doroty McVane daughter of Harvard professor arrested at Taranto on charges of captaining on Italian naval base. U S Ambassador Page notified. she had performed as a singer with an operatic company in southern Italy and was monitored after mail indicated evidence.
Charles Day aged 72 was arrested Saturday night at Red Hawk for drunken and disorderly behavior in the city business district. He appeared before Recorder Badeau who sentenced him to ninety days in county jail. Day, a prior offender, was told to consider leaving town. Mrs. Krismeyer of West End avenue visits Brooklyn. her friends staged a surprise party for her husband with Dutch treat and sauer kraut as the meal centerpiece.
Fidelity Lodge No. 42 F and A M held its last meeting at Union Aid Hall and elected officers for 1914. Past Master William Gardiner was installing officer. Officers named include W M J W Bailey senior warden Awbury Smallwood junior warden Thomas K E Bailey secretary J W Shreaves treasurer Andrew Ballard.
Joseph Bender, a horse dealer living beside the Southern railroad between North Broadway and Cooper avenue, was away when fire broke out on the second floor yesterday between 6 and 7 pm. Patrolman Edwards summoned help from box 82 as flames spread to the attic, but the upper part of the house suffered most. Damage amount unknown and reportedly insured. cause unclear.
Dr. William S. Green a leading Paterson physician was arrested on an arson warrant issued by Chief of Police Coyle. Police allege he set fire to his late father John W. D. Green home amid a property dispute. The new residence suffered Thursday night damage with six separate fire sources detected by firemen. Further undisclosed findings prompted the arrest.
In Treyton New Jersey on December 16 the Democratic Assembly and Senate held conferences. The rules committee proposed duplicating bills, retaining reporting on fifteen member requests, barring bills after March 1, eleven day lead time, and new standing committees on tax and social reform. Acting Governor Taylor said he will not appoint a Middlesex sheriff today to replace Bolschweiler, now U S Marshal, pending resignation.
In Hazlet a jury hears the case of August Freiman plaintiff versus P Otto Weigand defendant before Judge Bremnbach at City Hall. Freiman, a New York broker, contends commissions on the sale of Weigand property and other personal assets. Rotgard bought the property and Freiman seeks commission. The trial, today largely heard with one plaintiff witness, may lead to further action between Rotgard and Weigand. The hearing reserved for Freiman Weigand is set for today with uncertainty on defense. Old Dr Stork visited North Long Branch yesterday and a baby boy was born. Activities at Parker's Theatre promise Pelleas Melisande in eight reels. Ad notices follow for entertainment in Red Bank and Long Branch venues.
