A New Jersey birthday celebration for Captain Nelson Lockwood of Galilee featured a clambake with a colored trio and a commemorative poem. The event, organized by the Lockwood family, delayed by Freehold travel, included a buffet of clams, Jersey watermelon, and a toast by Cecil Kingston.
Mrs. Daniel Ferguson of Atlantic Highlands died at 34 after a thunderstorm incident. Her husband noted a vivid flash and thunder as she reached a window, but no marks of lightning were found. Five children under twelve survive.
Long Branch will be represented at a big tennis tournament in Boston on Labor Day. Mrs Mamie C Wimm will play against Eastman athlete Miss Rose Lee and is confident she can win. Edison M Wicker, Boston Tennis Club president and a Long Branch summer visitor, will host her.
Mrs George W Young nee Madame Nordica gifts a heavy grain red carpet for Oakhurst M E Church interior. Pastor Fisler and congregation thank her and anticipate pew replacement next Sunday. Several local election clerks named for Middletown and Port Monmouth districts.
Isaac Stein proprietor of the Rockwell Hotel was seized by heart trouble last Sunday and confined to his room but he came downstairs this morning and remains unable to resume his duties. The physician advises quiet for several days. Water Carnival Tomorrow at Manahasset House Monmouth Beach features land and water sports with a night parade of decorated boats and prizes at nine. Dancing will follow the carnival and Manahasset Bay annual event draws many summer visitors with a large crowd expected. Baseball by the Chicago National League team with Chance Evers Tinker Brown and full line-up at Hollywood Horse Show Grounds Sunday August 27. Frank Chance and the Chicago Cubs arrive tomorrow for a three day coastal visit. The 33 man squad will stay at the Hollywood Hotel and showcase a regular lineup against Long Branch at the Horse Show grounds Sunday.
The Record awarded a golden key to the Doll Carnival. It was minted at Calvin Cunnins' mill yesterday and handed to the carnival committee today. Mayor Packer will present the key to Queen Jeanette Finn at tonight's coronation ceremonies.
Mr and Mrs J A Benjamin along with others contributed fifteen mechanical dolls as prizes for the upcoming Dol lies parade. The dolls are on display today at A F Goldens Broadway store for public viewing.
Dr. T. Brown of Orange New Jersey, formerly of this city, returned home today after a pleasant visit with his family. He is a graduate of astropathy and a student of homeopathy.
Mrs Celeste Groff aged 75 of Buttonwood Avenue died at 6 this morning after a brief illness due to dysentery. Mrs RK Buxton of New York and her daughter arrived to arrange funeral details. William H H Morrix Jr funeral director shipped the body to Long Island for interment in Pine Lawn cemetery.
Mr and Mrs Joseph J Finley away from their Union avenue residence when flames erupted in the attic causing extensive damage to woodwork roof and stairs. Neighbors alerted firefighters from Independent engine house and only swift action saved the double dwelling owned by Chris Brehm.
Harry Kingsland 35 formerly of Bath avenue and Long Branch, died after a short illness at McKinley Hospital Trenton. He had worked in Trenton cafes for years and was last at the Bismarck cafe. His body will be brought home for interment. survived by parents and several brothers.
Plumbers from Long Branch and Red Bank Local Unions plan a day outing in Newbold's woods titled Plumbers Day. They will refrain from work and hold athletic events and a clam bake with emphasis on avoiding idle moments and preventing leaks except those in the woods.
The Second Baptist Sunday-school hosts a large rally next Sunday with Rev YT B Hughes of First Baptist Church preaching at three in the afternoon and Rev BE M Murphy of Newark preaching at night. The choir under P H Hatcher will provide special music to raise funds for the Sunday school.
The U S Weather Bureau predicts showers for tonight and Saturday in New Jersey with light to moderate variable winds. Observations from Long Branch show a 43 North Broadway display station with a barometer around 30.14 at last night and 30.05 this morning, wind northeast at 23 miles per hour, temperature 63, humidity ranging from 94 to 85 percent, and rainfall totaling 1.12 inches. Heaviest reported precipitation in the last 24 hours includes Mobile Alabama 1.56 inches and Evansville 1.30 inches.
Clarence Austin of Hoboken and William Hulsart of Newark were saved by fisherman John Delson after clinging to an upturned boat for nearly two hours during a fierce coastal squall. The men, vacationers at Highlands, had launched from their rented power boat and were swept by a large wave before capsizing. Austin supported a weakened Hulsart until both were buoyed to safety.
David H. Eldridge a Perth Amboy United Lead Company shipping clerk was arrested on two counts of grand larceny for selling white lead at lower prices and pocketing the proceeds. He confessed and was held on $1,000 bail after a hearing before Recorder James H. Sickles.
George A. Sweery superintendent of the Port Monmouth plant of the New York and New Jersey Fish and Game Company has purchased a new pleasure motor boat. Also notes moving pictures every night at Ocean Park theatre opposite the bandstand. A personal gratitude letter from James H. White thanks neighbors and friends for sympathy during a bereavement.
Assemblyman Elmer H. Geran announces withdrawal from the Senate contest and reaffirms candidacy for the General Assembly. In a Monmouth County message he cites party succession and duty, praising the last Legislature and pledging to uphold shared public interests.
Clarence V. King closes Port Monmouth blacksmith shop after eight years and takes over Charles H. Hurley's machine shop at Shrewsbury. Witham Vaughn of Port Monmouth holds the contract to erect temporary buildings and sheds at the Red Bank Fair Grounds and now directs a large workforce there.
Helena resident Mrs. L C Gable known as the Montana Girl completed a 4500 mile horseback ride. She carried letters between mayors and will likely perform lariat demonstrations at the Red Bank Fair and Hollywood Horse Show Grounds next week. Card of thanks notes a bereavement support.
Four year old Jeanette Finn, daughter of Park Commissioner Joseph Finn, will be crowned queen at eight tonight in Washington Park as part of the second annual doll carnival. A rehearsal at the Broadway home of the queen featured a festive program with the Long Branch Military Band, a keys presentation by Mayor E W Packer, and multiple vocal numbers and marches.
