Hope Abandoned for Sibylle Submarine Missing Off Riviera
The French navy gave up hope of rescuing the 48 crew of the submarine Sibylle missing on maneuvers off the Riviera since Wednesday morning. A naval communique said the Sibylle must be considered lost as oil slicks and objects were found about six miles east of Cap Camarat in 2100 feet of water. Rescue equipment cannot reach depths of 150 to 180 feet. The crew included five officers, nine noncommissioned officers, and 34 men. The 1600-ton submarine, formerly the Sportsman, had a notable WWII record sinking or damaging substantial enemy shipping.
