Cpl. Arthur Bowditch of Long Beach describes life as a prisoner of Chinese Communists in Korea and details being a human guinea pig in a prison camp hospital at Chungsung after months of filth starvation and neglect.
By CPL. ARTHUR BOWDITCH, the account describes a hospital stay in captivity where beri-beri dysentery and tuberculosis plagued prisoners. He recalls a desperate Moscow sold “miracle drug” treatment that harmed many, the indifferent guards, and a fellow Englishman, Billy Gunn, who helped him survive.
In New Orleans eight surgeons separated Lafayette twins Carolyn Anne and Catherine Anne Mou ton after a three hour operation that ended at 11 20 am. Both girls were placed in separate cribs and labeled very satisfactory with hope they survive. The twins shared a fused vertebrae and lower intestinal tract.
Sgt. Francis McCarthy of Boston says several Koje Island guards captured by North Koreans face trial as war criminals. He and two other guards, Sgt. John Rogers of Arlington and Sgt. Urban Publicover of Cambridge, were en route to Boston after the claim. He notes Reds learned of guards through loose talk and blabbing.
Forestry officials report a new blaze in Sierra National Forest Wednesday night burning out of control. In Merced Canyon west of El Portal the fire covers about 400 acres along a steep canyon wall and may grow by 100 acres before control. A 100-man base is set at Indian Flat to support operations.

An Otawnonna Minnesota 16 year old military academy pupil Fletcher Hankel died after shooting himself Wednesday while playing Russian roulette with a .22 caliber revolver. He was the son of Mrs Anna Johnson of Chicago.

Police trapped three young bandits minutes after a 1 45 a m holdup and spread a dragnet that led to two more arrests. The six robberies in four days tied the Long Beach area gang to service stations in Downey South Gate and Long Beach. Leaders named include 17 year old Ronald Harold Anderson and 20 year old Richard Lester Rumble with others linked to the crew. The group netted about 150 dollars and cigarets before capture.
Industrial employment in California rose to 1,092,100 last month, a postwar high and the highest since September 1944. Director Paul Scharrenberg cited a 41,000 gain from mid July to mid August, driven mainly by seasonal fruit and vegetable canning expansion in the age and salary workforce.

A Los Angeles blast as a butane gas tank exploded injuring six people and damaging two buildings near 12 E 59th St. The truck backed into Moberg Laboratories loading dock, a valve was scraped off, a wall blew out, and fire spread to nearby Dillon Industries. Injuries included driver Robert Lee Smith and three employees. none in serious condition.
CALAIS France A F Dean expects to depart by plane believed in difficulty during a channel flight to return to his wife in Berkeley California. French officials say the distress report was misinterpreted and the plane landed safely at Le Touquet near Le Touquet Airport. The general who spent three years at Le Touquet was treated at Tokyo Army Hospital for amoebic dysentery after the incident.

Naval Captain J R McKinney, foe of gambling, faced a challenge to his voting right as he cast a ballot in the Seal Beach Council recall election. City Clerk F W Hickman overruled protests about Mrs Mee Kinney, and polling proceeded with few incidents. The recall contest drew 2530 registered voters, with about 1600 expected to vote, while challengers eyed voters at multiple sites including Airport Club workers. Capt McKinney, commander of the Seal Beach Ammunition Depot, criticized a challenger for claiming nonresidence due to military service and urged support in radio appeals. The Good Government Group sought to defeat the recall and organized challenges at several polling places.
