Police report 39 cars on S Mitchell and 8 Mariposa Avenues had tires pierced with an ice pick in an unexplained vandalism. A witness saw a man in Navy uniform stab a tire. he yelled and the suspect fled. Police logged 21 official complaints, with many more non filed complaints.
Attorney General McGranery dismissed Elis N. Slack as head of the tax division and appointed Charles S. Lyon, former chief counsel to the House committee probing tax scandals. Slack will return to his former appellate duties after acting as tax chief since November 16, 1950 amid congressional scrutiny of the St. Louis grand jury handling. The judiciary subcommittee criticized alleged interference with the grand jury and the case proceeded under scrutiny.
Defense Secretary Lovett urged Douglas Aircraft Co and IAM leaders to continue negotiations as a second strike loomed at the Santa Monica plant amid Lockheed walkout threats. IAM called mass meetings, union shop demand remains central, and wage offers are in dispute. Total 71,000 workers could be affected if all three plants strike.

The Defense Department asked for 47 000 draftees for the Army in November. Other services will not call for draftees that month. The October and November calls are the same at 47 000. So far since October 1950, 1 107 430 men have been drafted, with the Army taking 1 026 000 and the Marine Corps 81 430. The Marines have taken no draftees since last May.
Two men described as tall and stocky and short and slim robbed Mayfair Market at 520 W. Willow St. for the second time in a month, taking about $5000 in cash and checks. They wore bandanas and darkened foreheads and were identified by employees as the same pair who robbed the store three weeks earlier, when $3000 was stolen after pistol-whippin g two clerks and ignoring several customers.
In Auburn California a minister and two accomplices posed as federal agents to steal $23000 from Mr and Mrs Joseph Lemos a fruit stand operator couple. McCalmont Benny Daniels and a Roseville yardmaster admitted involvement in the ruse after the Lemos reported the loss to the FBI and sheriffs. The minister used a wig and clown shoes to disguise as a woman and pressured the couple to withdraw money. Federal charges could follow alongside grand theft counts.
U N artillerymen bombarded valleys north of Capitol Hill keeping Communist forces from launching assaults on the central front ridge. Dawn reports from South Korean scouts describe Chinese casualties filling the valleys while allied heavy guns dispersed Red units from squads to about 730 men. North of Chorwon a four hour battle left 35 Communists killed and 72 wounded. The Fifth Air Force claimed one MIG shot down and two damaged after 24 Sabres engaged 24 MIGs south of the Yalu River.
Melvin W. Keel, manager, said about 960 dollars were taken from an open cash register at Cole's Market, 1843 Santa Fe Ave, between 3 and 4 pm Thursday. The thieves reportedly emptied every cash drawer while clerks attended a customer, and the loss is estimated at 960 dollars.

Taft praised unity and dismissed talks of differences, while Democrats warned of Old Guard and convention backers split.
San Bernardino area deputies recaptured two of three young escapees from the county jail. Twenty four year old Fontaine W Russ and 17 year old Robert L Davis were found at a Del Rosa home and a gas station respectively. A third man Donald S Cockerel 21 remained at large as police hunted him. A motel robbery occurred as the escapees fled, with $37 taken.
In Louisville a major fire at the Kentucky State Fair grounds routed about 4000 spectators and caused an estimated 80 000 dollars in damage to the grandstand. A wind-fed spark from a discarded cigarette ignited the 50 year old structure but there were no casualties.
A burning transformer sparked high voltage shocks in Viliestra del Pimar, Burgos region. Six people died and about thirty were injured as residents tried to switch off lights in their homes Thursday night.
Governor Stevenson urged a hopeful future for America in Los Angeles praising Gov. Earl Warren and noting bipartisan support. He spoke before 6700 at Shrine Auditorium amid a whistle-stop tour and light banter, while Warren’s Republican backing appeared evident.
Downey California resident Sirman Fatapov Jr and Airman Dwight Archer Jr both of Keesler Air Force Base were jailed in Gulfport Mississippi on murder warrants in the death of Airman Richard J. Wilson of Dallas Texas. The bodies were found in the Tchoutouba River near Biloxi on August fifth. The case involves the 3383rd Student Squadron and District Attorney Luther Maples handling the arrest warrants.
