Four Stage Rocket Built by Young Texans Fails on Launch
Corpus Christi Texas youths from the Reaction Research Society tested a 21 foot 300 pound four stage rocket named Zinc Dust Nine aimed at 135 miles. The first launch broke apart over Padre Island sand dunes after two designers Bell and Beckner detonated the missile. The three remaining sections drifted apart at about 500 feet, with the fourth failing to gain momentum. The test produced data for future builds. Beckner attributed nozzle blowout to the failure. Navy safety measures were in place on the Texas coast. Other group members included Sweeney Buck and Wilson. Time classified ads note services available for ad writing.
