Bridges Loses Appeal in Citizenship Perjury Case
San Francisco AP The Federal Appeals Court today affirmed the 1950 perjury conviction of longshore leader Harry Bridges and upheld the revocation of his U S citizenship. Bridges, a native Australian, was convicted of swearing he was not a Communist at his 1945 naturalization hearing. Two fellow officers of the International Longshoremen and Warehousemen's Union were convicted with him of conspiracy. The court ruled all elements of knowledge were present and no error occurred in canceling his citizenship. Bridges, 51, was sentenced to five years in prison. His co-defendants J R Robertson, 47, and Menny Schmidt, 52, got two-year terms. Bridges planned an immediate remand and possible appeal to the Supreme Court.
