United Nations diplomats say the deadlocked Korean armistice talks will be pushed to the General Assembly this fall. Washington and London now back discussion of the truce with Red China and North Korea to secure a settlement, a major shift from prior policy. High level talks in New York and Washington involve 13 nations with troops in Korea to craft a formula for the Assembly, which opens October 14.

Fowler will assume the post Monday and may remain in the defense production job until merger plans are set.

A dynamite filled truck exploded at Welkom railway station in Welkom, a gold mining center in the Orange Free State. Twelve people were killed and scores injured as the blast caused widespread damage across the area.
