Amusing political zigs and snake science in Long Beach
A ragged Long Beach piece notes the campaign track for Prop P and buses into local lore. It recalls Lester E. Jenkins, Laws pioneer, and Mrs. Alderete, then threads through California reptiles. Schuepback touts snakes as beneficial, urges state protection, and supports research by herpetologists under the Fish and Game Commission.

Impulse leads boy to seek kin near Pacific Coast Highway
A 16 year old boy in a red shirt and jeans walked along the Pacific Coast Highway west of Crate Clyete Wednesday morning asking strangers about his mother. Francis Sheahan, 52, of Hornby Street, picked him up and learned the boy’s name is Francis Joseph Sacahan, 7, from Newberry, Michigan. The boy said his mother Dorothy Marie Sheahan, 33, left their home in Saginaw four years ago. He hoped to find her in Long Beach while he stays with relatives, and he noted she was attending a senior college. His father is Francis M. Sheahan. The boy is the eldest of six boys with no sisters, and he had $20 when last seen. Kyam said he would continue searching for the mother.

New Device Catches Truck Loading Gases
TORRANCE A new device to combat smog was demonstrated Thursday at General Petroleum plant by Western Oil and Gas Association officials. The system, developed by General Petroleum, captures vapors and prevents their release during gasoline loading. It fits over a truck loading hose, channels fumes to a compressor where they are burned, reducing hydrocarbon emissions. Officials expect 20 installations by May 1955 at a cost over 1 million dollars, cutting emissions by about 17 tons daily. Refinery operations now emit about 140 tons daily, 9.4 percent of total, with industry wide emissions about 207 tons daily, down from 819 tons yearly ago.
