Gov. Goodwin J. Knight announced a proposed mid year state appropriation of emergency funds to help Southern California combat smog. A 22 member conference in Los Angeles heard medical and air pollution experts urge treating smog as a health issue, noting no imminent disaster but potential catastrophic air quality if unchecked.
A 21 year old sailor Joseph Mitchell Roos died at Tong Beach Naval Base after slipping between a piling and the ship G-29 during an attempt to jump aboard. Foggy wet conditions caused by heavy fog hampered movement and contributed to the accident. Sailor James D. Carter witnessed the event and aided search efforts but could not free the victim. The body was taken to Dispay Mortuary pending coroner examination.
A grass and scrub fire near Tejon Canyon fifteen miles east of Gropeving was reported out of control. County Fire Chief Elmo Freear said the blaze began Friday afternoon and has burned over 200 acres. Eighty two men and sixteen bulldozers are on the fire lines, and all leaves have been canceled for county firemen.

A bandit shot and wounded service station operator Fred Carpenter and a female attendant Marie McLaughlin at Carpenter's Self Serve Station on Imperial Highway. The suspect fled on foot with more than $2,000 from a check cashing booth as witnesses reported hearing two shots and seeing a man run east on 117th Street. Carpenter remains in critical condition at Los Angeles County General Hospital and McLaughlin is listed in fair condition at St Francis Hospital Lynwood after being struck by 45 caliber bullets. Emergency care was given at Tweedy Industrial Hospital.
A Winnipeg Limited passenger train struck a car carrying eight high school sophomores near St. Cloud Minnesota. Six teens died and two were injured. The victims include Cathedral High School students Sharon Roder Shirley Hinkenmeyer Janice Johnson Nancy Minars William Enli and Larry Stoltman. Two St John's High School students were survivors.

Bob Lane 18 Hollywood High alumnus now at Santa Monica City College. and Howard Gutman 17 Marshall High junior. Forty police officers contained the disturbance.
Orange County grand jury returns four more liquor license related indictments. Charles Devine and Harry Lehman surrendered Friday. Devine posted $1000 bail, Lehman awaiting bail. Indicted also Al Tossas and Louis Trapani. perjury and conspiracy suspected. Arraignments set later for others. Devine and Lehman ex labor and bar figures named.
A World War II era B25 trainer crashed on a farm six miles northwest of a Nebraska city on a late Friday training flight from Offut Air Force Base. Pilot Maj. Joseph E. Tichenor, 32, copilot Capt. Truman G. Kalls, 36, and crew chief A/2 C. John Te. Hindman were killed. Tichenor's family resided in Louisville Kentucky Knolls hailed from Rock Island Wisconsin Hindman came from near Butler Pennsylvania.
Report of violent unrest in Amman ends with a library set aflame amid street battles. At least three persons fatally hurt as mobs clash with authorities and information services suffer damage.
A massive hurricane swept from the Caribbean through the eastern U S into Canada, killing at least 86 and leaving millions in ruin. Pennsylvania rivers flooded towns, thousands evacuated, with power outages and disrupted communications. Civil defense crews rescued hundreds as eight states and D C faced widespread damage and rising waters. Multiple states reported fatalities and extensive property loss as the storm moved northward toward Ontario and Hudson Bay.
