Navy Plans to Expand Its Rocket Research Program
The Navy outlines a major expansion of rocket research from July 1957 to December 1958. Budgeted at about 1.7 million dollars for the effort, plus 10 million for a satellite project, the plan includes launching 6 to 10 small satellites to 200 to 800 miles altitude from White Sands and Fort Churchill. Dr Homer Newell, acting on Hudson's Bay, notes the Naval Research Laboratory will oversee the rocket and satellite programs and aims to achieve longer orbital durations.
