Fog Shrouds Southern California Coast Halting Travel

Thick fog crippled air travel and halted much shipping along the Southern California coast. The Weather Bureau noted daytime fog easing but predicted continued night fog with possible afternoon sun. Port of Long Beach ran normally while harbor pilots reported no shipping delays despite 1300 accidents in 48 hours.

Dike breach floods Seal Beach area. residents sandbag homes

Strong waves breached a fifty yard section of Seal Beach sand dike near Murray Jr. apartments. Though no property damage reported, several front doors were secured with sandbags to prevent flooding, with some seepage under doors. The six foot high barrier, installed last October at ten thousand dollars, broke away as waves battered the shore from Murray Jr. to the pier.

Justice Douglas granted stays of execution to Barbara Chawn and Johnny Santo, sentenced in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Oct. 13, 1953, for the murder of Mable Monohin of Burbank. Stay pending Supreme Court action on appeals. claims cited due process issues and coerced confessions.

Sing Tao Jih Pao reports in Canton that Yingtak district farmers raided the Monegpi market after a ration depot ran dry of rice. Red soldiers killed six farmers and arrested 20 others in the roundup.
