Nike missile secrecy breach exposed in Stevens office

A 20-foot Nike guided missile scale model was found on Secretary Stevens’s Pentagon desk during a public swearing-in. Reporters observed the display and a photo was requested but later deemed premature for release after a Defense Department review. The model included a truck, launcher, and detachable booster mirroring flight features.

Oil President and Wife Lose $4000 in Hotel Trash Dump

David E. Jordan, president of North American Petroleum, and his wife reported their belongings worth up to 4000 dollars hauled away from the Naples Hotel alcove. Police traced some items to a city dump after a trash truck allegedly removed the trunk and valuables. The couple had left a dog tied to the trunk and posted a sign reading Keep Hands Of.

Powder Plant Blast Kills Two at Hercules Facility

An explosion rocked the Hercules powder plant near Pinole California today killing two workers and injuring two others. The blast damaged a 20 by 30 foot frame building and sent rescuers to the scene from five miles away. Fire equipment rushed in as shockwaves reached San Francisco and San Mateo. The plant supervisor put damage at about 30000 dollars. two injured were taken to Richmond Hospital. Names of the dead were not immediately available.

New York reports that Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. U S ambassador to the United Nations has received death threats from Puerto Rican nationalists. Destroyer Stands by Storm Crippled Freighter

The British destroyer St. Bride's Bay assisted the 1911-ton freighter Tefkros adrift 60 miles southeast of Amoy in Formosa Strait amid a northeast gale. The freighter had lost its rudder and requested help as the tow line to the destroyer parted. a new line was being prepared for attachment.

Plane Tank Drops Fire Over Garden Grove Home

A gasoline tank fallen from an unidentified airplane struck near Gilbert Ave and Shannon St in Garden Grove. It ignited a blaze that damaged R. J. Shannon’s home at 9351 Shannon St and its contents, and damaged a citrus grove, a gas gauge, and drafting equipment. Fire crews from Garden Grove extinguished the fire. total losses estimated around 800 dollars.

Excess weight helps woman survive 13 story hotel fall

A 45 year old woman survived a 13 story fall from a hotel when a skylight broke her tail and she landed sitting down. Jefferson Hospital physicians said her extra weight cushioned the impact and helped diffuse the shock. She sustained fractures of the right leg and other injuries but is recovering.

Four Die as Superfort Crashes at Biggs AFB

A B 29 from First Tow Target Squadron based at Biggs crashed during a return from a routine mission at Biggs Air Force Base. Four airmen were killed and four more injured when the four engine bomber broke in two and burned on landing. An Air Force board of inquiry was impaneled to determine the cause. Names of the dead and injured were withheld pending next of kin notification.

French officials announced New Zealand will provide military supplies to French forces fighting the Vietminh in China and Indochina.
