SAN DIEGO AP Sailors recount a make believe attack that turned real when a Navy bomber collided with the destroyer Hopewell on Friday. The bomber struck the superstructure near an ammunition magazine, igniting in flames. Five men were killed three in the bomber and two at their desks in the destroyer’s office. Five others of the Hopewell’s crew of 200 were burned but the ammunition did not explode. Captain Mark M. Gantar expressed disbelief at the miracle keeping the magazine safe.
