A gibbon named Alice escaped from Mrs. Marvin Crystal of Cerritos Avenue and roamed the city overnight. Police found the 30 inch ape at a neighbor’s door when she leaped into an open house and was returned after a diaper change and washing.
Hollywood news notes Rock Hudson, famed screen star and Navy veteran, eloped with Payllis Gates, the secretary to agent Henry Willson. They wed in Santa Barbara and plan a honeymoon before Hudson returns to work with Lauren Bacall. Gates previously helped Hudson land his first screen test in 1948.
President Eisenhower passes his final hospital medical exam with flying colors. He accepts the resignation of his appointments secretary Bernard Shanley and names a 12 member commission with two Democrats and two Republicans to study government security. The report also notes a San Fernando Valley fire in Ventura County and arson arrests of two boys in La Tuna Canyon.

A polar bear fatally mauled a six year old boy after he fell into the moat separating spectators from the bears at a Mendoza zoo. Police responded by shooting the animal.
A Navy seaplane tender Floyds Bay rescued four of five airmen from a stricken Flying Boxcar 650 miles east of Honolulu as a Pacific storm hampered search efforts. Lt. Kenneth Whitney and Airman 1/c Harry Brinegar, both among the survivors, signaled lifebelts, while Lt. D. C. Nelson and Lt. D. M. Hibbard were later found. The missing Airman 2/c Cherry Gaywood remained unaccounted for as Coast Guard, Air Force, and Pan American planes joined the hunt.
Soviets stated they would restart POW repatriation at Camp Friedland in Germany this weekend. Officials at the West German center reported indirect indications that about 500 German prisoners of war would be returned, ending a three week pause.
