San Francisco police said a plot to kidnap the wife and year-old son of Bank of America executive Louis King was foiled by the suspicious mother. The kidnapper tried to lure Mrs. Dorothy King from her home claiming she had won a TV quiz prize and needed to go to the station to claim it.
In a copyrighted interview the Des Moines Register quotes T Lamar Caudle former head of the Justice Department criminal division saying he warned officials to block the late Harry Dexter White from a major government post. Brownell charged Truman with naming White after FBI warnings, Truman denied prior spy reports and fired White. A separate San Francisco case details a planned kidnapping scare aimed at a banker, with a ransom demand of 20000 and police intercepts.
The U S Weather Bureau chief ordered a special investigation into forecasts after a major northeast snowstorm. Dr Francis W Reichelderfer said muffed forecasts will be probed. the storm shifted from Gulf Coast origins to a northeast path, dumping snow to the Great Lakes and near New York City.

The Gentian reached the Helen M after battling rough seas that forced a stop once.
In Panmunjom United States and Communist staff advisers opened secret talks aimed at breaking a deadlock delaying a Korean peace conference. Two Allied and two Communist negotiators met for about an hour and forty minutes and agreed to reconvene at 12 a.m. Monday. Kenneth Young said both sides would stay noncommittal publicly until they report to their principals. Col. Lee Soo Young will observe, and Dean plus top Red diplomats plan to hand the dispute to staff advisers for possible informal progress.

In Buchanan County Virginia an estimated 100 mountain homes lay in the path of a 1000 acre forest fire moving down Bull Mountain. Forester D M Waite said winds had eased and the buildings were relatively safe for now though the blaze remained out of control at last report. He expected the flames to be brought under control unless high winds return.
A 37 year old man at 1902 Orange Ave hosted a drinking party for juveniles. Billie Dennie Melson was arrested on suspicion of contributing to delinquency of minors after officers observed teens aged 14 to 16 at the scene. beer and whiskey were provided. five juveniles were detained then released for return to the juvenile bureau with parents.
MT HOLLY New Jersey five sailors died and one was seriously injured when their car skidded on a snow slick Turnpike and struck a trailer truck. The accident occurred late Friday night as the vehicle veered into the path of the truck.
In Rome and other Italian cities violent anti British riots erupted over Trieste. About 12 000 gathered near the British embassy in Rome and riot police fired tear gas. Police and rioters suffered injuries with clashes also reported at Bari and the British consulate.
A British freighter Hydra lock traveling from Hong Kong to a Red China port reported interception by an unidentified warship 25 miles southeast of Amoy in the Formosa Strait. It said a warplane attacked the vessel, damaging the bridge, but no crew members were hurt and it later reached Tsingkiang northeast of Amoy.
